Trump's still going to go after Smith. I doubt any amount of ring kissing will save him.
This will have a side effect of first enraging, and the disillusioning anybody who legitimately thought a Trump prosecution was necessary. Lots of those folks will become cynical about any government effort to hold presidents accountable, whether or not Trump needed such accountability.
This is an impetus for further concentration of executive power.

After this July, "Unitary Executive Power" is no longer a theory, but an establishment in practice. I'm not sure if it gets more "impetus for further concentration of executive power" than that.
WASHINGTON — Special counsel Jack Smith has filed a motion to drop all four felony charges against President-elect Donald Trump in connection with his effort to overturn his 2020 presidential election in the lead-up to the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S Capitol.
He did his job. He has little control over the various levers that were available to be pulled to slow the process down to the point that justice was not only delayed, but denied. Had Garland proceeded with the appropriate amount of haste justice may have been better served, and provided the populace valuable information about the individual they decided to elect.
