Interesting that this should come up for me on HN today. I just started rereading Drive by Daniel H. Pink last night.
It covers older research that goes over these phenomena and how introducing extrinsic reward can actually hamper internal motivation.
As someone with ADHD who struggled with doing the job I was paid to do but would “waste time” on the business’s problems I found more interesting (usually automating paper processes or writing code to make tools to use to do my actual job), this book revealed exactly why that’s the case and how I mismatch many of the work environments I find myself in.
