My take is that the problem with "fake news" is that it hooks people emotionally.
To tell true from false you need to create a god. To detect emotionally contagious content is a student project in a data science class (ModernBERT + RNN for the win) so long as you have the training set (10000 examples would do it although curating 5000 emotionaly negative examples could wreck your mental health)
Suppress emotionally negative contagious content and you solve the problem of social media leading to political insanity. Bluesky is showing the way. The masses think "there is no algorithm" but they're wrong and Bluesky's competitors know better.
It's an interesting point but many news are factually correct and emotionally engaging. Fact-checking and verification practices are meant to be part of news providers' due dilligence to ensure factual accuracy to the extent that is possible given the circumstances.
