WW2 fighters in space has always seemed really weird scifi to me. If we ever fight wars in space it will be done by computers trying to out maneuver eachother over millions of miles.

It's entertainment. Dogfights in space with pew-pew lasers are entertaining and make intuitive, if not technical, sense to people who understand how aircraft work. Drones making slight corrective maneuvers and sniping each other at light-second distances isn't entertaining.
