I saw this news a few days ago and it really just gives me the same feeling as when Elon Musk says "full self driving is coming next year" for the 11th year in a row.
I think a big part of the job of modern CEOs in tech has become this kind of publicity stunt to generate hype and keep the valuation of the company high.
I'm sorry but there's no research out there that is anywhere close to AGI. I doubt openAI has some knowledge that no one else in academia has to that extent. This would be such a huge development that I'm sure we'd be seeing glimpses of it in formal research by now.
