Sun's Solaris 2.1 x86 version in 1993 predated that, and Wabi allowed running 16-bit Windows applications, but certainly AMD64 led to the sort of high power workstations that had previously been proprietary, and basically ended their reign while stopping Itanium in its tracks, for the most part.

Another thing that led to their rapid disappearance is that even though used UNIX workstations could be found, parts were often difficult to find, obsoleted, incompatible with other brands, or notably more expensive than PC types.
