Ask HN: Does Microsoft pose a risk for private GitHub repositories?

1 points| mortallywounded | 10 months ago

I currently have a product codebase that is privately hosted on my own VPS.

Historically, Microsoft hasn't liked my product. I received a C&D several years ago because Microsoft felt my product violated LinkedIn's terms of service.

For ease of collaboration, I am considering moving the code to GitHub (since everyone has an account).

However, Microsoft owns GitHub. What kind of risk do you think this brings? Would Microsoft try to weaponize my code against me?

Email Microsoft and/or GitHub's legal department. HN isn't qualified to answer your question.

Or, if this matters enough to spend a bit of coin to get a more trustworthy answer, consult a business attorney. I wouldn't really trust whatever Microsoft's or GitHub's legal department has to say. They represent the company's interests, not yours.
