I wanted a simple way to track my expenses without connecting to my bank or handing over personal data or dealing with upsells and ads. I started with an Excel sheet, but updating it on my phone wasn’t intuitive.

Free My Cash is a single-file-based finance tracker that runs entirely in the browser. You can create or upload a JSON file of transactions, then edit, categorize, and visualize them. When you're done, just download the file and take it with you.

There are some experimental features too — like importing CSVs from bank exports, and an optional backend that versions your data file on each update. I personally use it with a basic JSON backend.
