I think this is a larger extension of the internet problem where accusations are cheap and their impact great.

I find myself qualifying my statements or even not bothering with some ideas in some spaces occasionally because I know it will be construed as some extreme I'm not supporting and after that starts you really can't have a conversation.

Ditto. I’ve been using them for literally decades (because the old Macs made them so easy to type). And with X11 and xkb they’re even easier!

I do worry that some of my comments have been downvoted by kids blindly downvoting anything with an em dash, but at the end of the day I prefer good style (by my lights) to imaginary Internet points.
