Ask HN: Wywd with a 256gb/40c 300tb/month server?

ended up splurging on a huge server that I intended to run all of my side projects but have not been able to utilize it to its full potential. Basically I just wanted something fixed cost / month to run anything as much as I want.

what would you do with it other than a seedbox? its running proxmox but I ended up spending months learning and configuring it and now afraid to give up on it. it would be great if I could monetize it and keep the server going I've grown quite fond of it.

I might build another one and colocate it

You could run a Solana validator. Here's a calculator if you want to get a sense of the potential revenue: https://www.aeropool.io/validatorprofitcalculator

Bare in mind:

- bandwidth will be high, say 20-25 TB/mo outgoing

- ram you might be tight, if you have the chance to grow to 384-512 it'd prob be better

- you'll need at least 2 boxes, one for mainnet and one for testnet. Testnet will be "less important" so you can still run a lot of other things on that machine

If I were you, assuming you find this interesting, I'd start a testnet node on your current machine, get practice with it, as I was mentioning keep running your other services. And then if you're convinced you just rent a 2nd machine on any of existing providers/your favorite location to run mainnet.

Offer VM hosting, maybe to friends and family? Run a VPN service? Other than running stuff just for yourself, those are a couple ways I can think of to maybe monetize it.

You can create users for a VPN easily with Pritunl -- I'd offer that to friends and family.

Forgive me if it’s a rude question but I’m assuming it’s a monthly cost. Can I ask how much you are paying for it? It also might be helpful so others can offer suggestions maybe tailored towards helping pay for it. :)

Run a high-speed TOR exit or relay node if your situation allows it.

Or build your own website or service uptime detector.

Finally: mirror those openbsd and Linux distributions...and serve that up your local area.

never run a exit node.

but always run a non exit node. even in home fiber it's fine and you won't notice the bandwidth.
