Do you have CPU or network spikes when opening HN?
None here. HN is nearly the lightest-weight site I use. Have you tried disabling all addons to see if one of them is choking on something? If using Firefox ago to about:processes to see where the spike is within the browser. There is probably a way to do this in Chrome as well but I have no idea how.
Also a while back someone was saying they were seeing packet loss on an IPv6 path to HN that was causing slowness for them. Are you on IPv4 or IPv6? Cellphone?
