The ads made this unreadable. Is this a thing? Get to hackernews front page & then inject your post with as many ads as possible to “cash in”?

Not doubting your experience, but I can't see a single ad using Safari on iPhone.

I was really impressed with my setup, but after disabling content blockers (Firefox Focus), and turning off using Mullvad's free DNS proxy service, still nothing!

Perhaps the author turned the ads off since you visited?
