I agree with this to an extent, but I've noticed that this type of knowledge is much more prevalent in people who attended the top X% of schools, e.g. Stanford and MIT. I'm not convinced that getting a degree from Midwestern State University gives you much knowledge that being a tinkerer and self-taught technologist doesn't.

You can get a good education at regular universities like UW. But, you have to be careful in what courses you select. The easy A courses should be avoided like toxic waste. Don't bother with the weeder classes.
