Progressive taxation and a proper healthcare are now left leaning? The Weimar Republic wasn't Communist and it did it fine.
Some things were better after a privatisation, such as the telecos in Spain. Flat rates, low prices, finally everyone could join the Internet at fair prices in early 00's. Some people had modems and ISDN in late 90's but most of the blue collar people didn't care to set an internet connection at home.
A computer, maybe, because the kids needed to do some homework at school with a word processor; but for the internet most of the folks headed to cybercafés.
Phone calls, state bound? you paid per minute, with some kind of step counter logging your call time. Inter province calls? You would call your relatives once or twice a year (birthdays, holydays...) and that's it.
Healthcare, OTOH, just look what happened in Andalusia after some neocons tried to disrupt the public healthcare:
