The registry filings mentioned in the article are from May 2024, but as of August 2025, Proton has started to move it's infrastructure out of Switzerland due to "legal uncertainties" [1]. But that decision still seems to be in flux due to what anti-privacy laws the Swiss ends up passing. [2]

On their page talking about their new AI chatbot, Lumo, they say: "Because of legal uncertainty around Swiss government proposals to introduce mass surveillance — proposals that have been outlawed in the EU — Proton is moving most of its physical infrastructure out of Switzerland. Lumo will be the first product to move." [3]

Having said all that, don't throw all your eggs in Proton's basket. We've seen them suspend journalists emails [4], turn individuals over to law enforcement, embrace Trump's big tech vision & etc. I wouldn't consider it some kind of privacy utopia by any means, and keeping your services diversified is still a wise idea.
