People can lose senses and still adapt towards maintaining a self-composed personality, albeit struggling to reconcile differences with a past state. But anything that degrades the cerebral cortex causes a discernible loss of sense of self, for both the individual and any observers, and many times the individual doesn’t even remember or know they’ve undergone a change. In some sense, people are not just their own minds, but what other people remember of them.
