Ask HN: Who's given up on getting hired? (January 2026)

In the spirit of the monthly "Who's hiring?" and "Who wants to be hired?" threads...

If, in this market, you're no longer expecting to be hired for a tech/programming role, tell us what you're working on on your own, what technologies you're interested in/are following, and any interesting plans for alternative careers or what you're planning to do with your time.

Not exactly what you asked but some advice that may helpful to others as it has been to me: if you can’t find a role at the level or salary you want, scale back and take a lesser role with the goal of proving yourself at a new company and getting back on top fast.

The last 3 times I lost my job, I had to do this as no one was biting for what I wanted. All 3 times I started with a company and busted my chops to move up fast. Not ideal but it has worked for me. Current company was thrilled to get me for below market salary, but I was back on top after 3 months.

I had to take an ego hit each time. Not getting what I believe I deserved. At the end of the day, it worked out. Better than being unemployed or abandoning ship.

Something to think about.
