The one question that comes to mind, especially because "managing a product" is mentioned, is why would anyone explicitly provide free labour to any sort of profit enterprise?

There's deeper discussion to be had about open source projects that live within corporations at different degrees, but this specific bit feels very extractive unless we're just talking personal projects.
