I’m not at all affiliated with this project, just came across it and thought it looked interesting - it kind of resembles the sled from a CD drive tray. I could imagine an open hardware version of the printable files being created if they don’t already exist.

A quick search for the stepper motor drivers used shows sets of 5 for around $15, perhaps pair with a cheaper microcontroller than the Arduino Uno and total BOM costs could be $30 or so.
