Why does the Hacker News UI never get updated?

3 points| lasgawe | 3 days ago

I think it's because of the minimalism and the color palette the site uses. There are no images or fancy elements. just functionality that does what it's supposed to do. But I'm curious why others like it and what their opinions are.

I don’t see the point. It works well, and I can’t think of anything in the discussions I’d like changed.

So I’m happy they leave it as is.

Similarly I find old.reddit nearly perfect, though the way they crammed in multi-image support is a pain point for me.

I’m glad HN isn’t trying to follow random design trends.

This is why I like it. I've stopped going to a lot of other sites because they made their UIs too "modern" and reduced both the usability and information density so much that they stopped being useful to me.

I wish it had bigger buttons and links in mobile browsers. Other than that, it's great. Buttons are obvious (flat design is stupid) and text fields are clearly that.

Don't change.

It is already complete.

It's clean and it works. There really is no reason to update it.

The only meaningful improvement I would want is a dark mode, which they have steadfastly refused to provide.

because its perfect. although my one thing would be adding the ability to tag posts so we can filter by those topics.
