When I was 29, I knew someone who was really freaking out about being close to turning 30. To be honest, I wasn't thrilled about it either, but I was a lot more accepting of it.

I thought about why, and my theory is that it's probably a lot scarier if you haven't really accomplished anything yet, however you define accomplishment. Having your youth go away when it's a part of how you identify yourself by is a scary thing. If it's not, it stings less.
