As a painter I've been fanatically attached to the use of black probably longer than the article user has been alive. That said I say in his defense that there isn't a pure black available no matter what you do. Secondly a little goes a very long way and it is extremely easy for it to do a visual 'crash the party' on your design efforts so his cautions are right on the money.
