This is so true. In 2010, I worked on Mainframe. Yes , 2010 and yes on Mainframe. It was project interfacing modern data services with mainframe. I had to learn COBOL and z/OS architecture on how to do it. I graduated in 2007. When I talk with people of my age , they are so surprised that mainframes are still around and I worked on Mainframe. Many people don't know that large percentage of financial , insurance transaction still happen on mainframe. Remember you purchased policy last time or made changes or swiped your credit card ? Guess what , Mainframe was monster involved in processing. Now that was also programming.

So yes , regarding argument at hand , I think programming may not "necessarily" involve math ( as taught in school , college --FFT, DFT, DE, Matrix etc. ) always , math is integral ( sometime hidden ) component of programming.
