on: Flutter and Chrome OS
If I understand correctly, Flutter embedders use a low level rendering API that renders the UI similar to how a game is rendered - skipping native widgets altogether. This makes me wonder what's the battery consumption? Is it similar to electron?

on: To ORM or Not to ORM
I've wanted to like ORMs but they always get in the away as requirements start to get more complex. On the other hand, I like writing in plain SQL, but that's often hard to comprehend by other people - you cannot just glance through to know what's happening under hood.
I find Ecto to be the perfect balance of expressiveness, flexibility and clarity. In fact it's the single reason to have picked up Elixir.

on: Over 100 Riot Games Employees Walked Out to End Forced Arbitration
Is there an upside of arbitration for employees? From what I read it's mostly for the benefit of the company. How is it even legal to forcefully take away the right of settling matters in court?

on: Launch HN: Cosmic JS (YC W19) - API-first drop-in replacement for WordPress
Decoupling doesn't have anything to do with managing infrastructure. It means that the front end and the backend are communicating through an api, not a DB. This way you are not obliged to use the front end rendering of you don't want to. It's a special case of a headless CMS.

on: Microsoft Ironically Proves Forced Windows Updates Don’t Make Any Sense
Effective or not, forced updates give me a headache every time I have to use Windows. At this point I avoid it as much as I can, because I'm stuck in this very weird vicious circle where updates fail for whatever reason and then they have to be rolled back. I cannot finish a what would be a simple 5 minute task, but I'm forced to stare at my unusable computer for 1 hour. What a waste of time!

on: What Happened to the 100000 Hour LED Bulbs?
I noticed the same thing when I was playing the guitar. The constant flickering combined with a vibrating string at a high frequency produces a nice looking effect [1], which can be observed with a naked eye (unlike the one in the video).

on: Make School (YC W12) gains accreditation for 2-year applied CS bachelor’s degree
Sadly, this model won't work for Europe where tuition fees are very low already. I can give you an example with UK, where I did my bachelor at a top 10 university for roughly 10k GBP (i.e. 3k per year). My masters degree at a top 3 university was 6k and it lasted a single year.
Would you say that Europe is a target market for you? Have you thought about how you would tackle it?

on: Acquiring absolute pitch in adulthood is difficult but possible
My understanding is that you can train people to recognize few/certain tones, but if you have a perfect pitch you are able to do it for every tone, which is something that cannot be learned.
