I wrote Daniel an email once from a personal (non-academic) account once as I felt like there was something meaningful to discuss, though I didn't expect a response. He did indeed reply, and seemed remarkably down to earth and genuine considering he was something of a rockstar in pop-sci/psych. RIP.

Seasoned (non-enhanced) lifter here with a science background

There is a solid evidence base for creatine - it's one of the only supplements that actually has a decent evidence base. It's also relatively cheap and generic brands work.

Generally with the fitness industry, the key is looking for the quality sources of information. There are some good resources out there focussed on an evidence based and naturals or being open & transparent with information about "the dark side"...

- SSD abel - Geoffrey Verity Schofield - Team 3DMJ - Dr Mike Israetel - Stronger by Science - Brains and Gains with Dr. David Maconi

Also.....one of the biggest benefits of regular exercise and lifting for me personally is the mental health side of things. Really can't overstate this.

1_over_n | 3 years ago | on: British pound hits record low against the dollar

Not a tax expert here.

Singapore has a progressive personal tax system with top personal tax rate of 22% (i have not looked at Dubai).

The UK also has a progressive personal tax system, they just cut their top rate of tax from 45% to 40%

Corporate tax is 17% in Singapore, and 19% in the UK.

Also factor in, Ireland has a corporate tax rate of 12.5% and progressive tax rate up to 40%.

This cut seems meaningful from a market confidence perspective, it is unclear how the UK intends to fund these tax cuts in tandem with energy bailouts. Economists have taken a view that the books do not balance here. The UK has suggested that economic "growth" will solve the problem. In terms of attracting talent and businesses (and now possibly investment) to drive that growth as an alternative to the likes of Singapore or Ireland it seems unlikely.

"This is terribly wrong information, to the point of causing more harm to people who take it seriously."

^ this is generally correct for many of the classes of substances mentioned; however, it is also terribly wrong information concerning Opiate withdrawal.

I'm not sure in terms of case numbers - people can and do die from Opiate withdrawal due to vomiting and diarrhea leading to dehydration and/or heart failure due to elevated sodium levels.

This is clearly very preventable from a harm reduction perspective with the correct information.

It seems like the theme here is asymmetry in legal firepower & resources between entities.

I do personally feel like that the asymmetry is smaller between elastic and AWS than the say an indie dev and a company with $1M revenue for various reasons.

This doesn't mean that there still isn't a meaningful asymmetry between elastic and AWS.

1_over_n | 5 years ago | on: Ask HN: Where do you find potential customers to validate your idea / MVP?

I would say ideally wherever they hangout. Figuring that out is a big part of the job, next is to find out how to engage with them. Going through that process will lead to a lot of learning. Figuring out a distribution channel for whatever you are doing is essential for getting to market and finding early users will inform that process. Read the mom test if you haven't already so you have a framework for how to speak to potential users.

Vaudeville Villain is possibly my favourite work by him and i didn't like it on release. It was very much an album ahead of it's time and has grown on me massively with time.

1_over_n | 5 years ago | on: MF DOOM Has Died

I think part of the all caps thing thing is world building and relates to the graffiti influence in hip hop. All caps being and hand style used in many graffiti tags (and the MF DOOM tag). With DOOM a lot of the time you have to infer the meaning of a rhyme from what you know about DOOMs influence and his other works.

"He write "VIK" in a sick demented handstyle" -Viktor Vaughn (another alias), Raedawn.

Long time MF DOOM fan. Saw him live 3 times. One time was almost certainly an impersonator which people got angry about. I personally felt it was an innovative and funny move which played into the whole persona. He brought a lot of innovation to the genre.

1_over_n | 5 years ago | on: Japanese people stay fit for life without visiting a gym

Last time I checked Spain, japan, and singapore all had longest lifespans. I’m pretty sure people have to work till later than average in those countries. What if having “purpose” (a vocation) for longer is more important than dietary or exercise factors.
