'power to trick' - that hit the nail on the head! The oligarchs, higher level bureaucrats, politicians, extreme wealthy etc. that is the superpower, at their core, they are magicians but not in a good, fun way, more like con-man who have mastered the power to _trick_ and deceive. I came to the conclusion sometime ago, that all these people of power and position are really just charlatans, albeit extremely good ones, they are nothing to aspire to and respect, they are no better then a grifter using 'slight of hand' and deception to remove as much wealth and power from others to themselves and when all else fails, they will resort to force/war if need be. In a nutshell, nothing but liars, cheats, cowards and dishonorable megalomaniacs that put on a (good) show for us peasants to better rob us blind.

Plant some trees, preferably food bearing ones (if it makes sense in the location), nurture them. Bask in their growth. Simple, effective, takes little time and next to no money relatively. It is something just about anyone can do if motivated and will most likely still be around long after you have gone. Forget the enormity of the issues and just do something small, in your control that can have a +'ve effect!

No acceptable punishment, maybe not, however, fear can go a long way! Actual fear of _really_ losing all their family wealth, basically everything but the shirt on their back with a lifetime of hard labor to follow is probably a scarier proposition to these kind of scum then death is. On that note, hanging some of them from the rafters may also help deter this kind of parasitic behavior going forward.

Are you able to turn it on for the 'Windows Insider Program', do an update to latest dev build, then opt out of 'Window Inside Program' and in turn disable 'Optional Diagnostic data' ? Genuinely asking, as I would like to test it but would like to keep diagnostics phoning back to M$ home to a min. if possible.

'An electric induction cooker is superior to any kind of fire, in all aspects and ways, by large margins in every direction.' - except in running costs, I have no idea but assume they draw around 2000 watts for each plate.

Alternatively, I can collect enough firewood in a few days of my spare time, I would have spent in the woods anyway, that will heat my modestly sized house cozily and cook all my meals for at least 6 months of the years in temperatures that can drop to as low as -40 Celsius for days at a time. All it cost me was a bit of sweat and hard yakka in the autumn.

Those billionaire nerds may have been brilliant builders and may even started out with 'good' motivations but with their new found wealth and power, they are no longer the same people once they are inaugurated into the B. club. - 'Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely'.

2Xheadpalm | 5 years ago | on: "Equal pay for equal work" in remote jobs

In general I agree with you. As you point out, the company is under no obligation to do what is 'fair' for my work and it is my negotiating skills/power that will dictate how much I get paid. Fine, I accept this. However, on the flip side, a company should not expect my undying loyalty, working for free after hours, or take one for the team to get that release out etc. And no I will not be joining them on those bonding, team-building zoom meetings and/or retreats (will they still be a thing in a post-covid world?). Sorry its just business, maybe if you paid me equally for my work I would be more open to the above.

2Xheadpalm | 5 years ago | on: Nuclear war is unlikely to cause human extinction?

Extinction of the human race, maybe not BUT it would be the end of life on planet Earth as we know it. It would be a shame if extinction is not the outcome, any species _stupid_ enough to attempt to dominate its political and national 'ego' in such a manner deserves elimination from the gene pool of possible species choices.

2Xheadpalm | 5 years ago | on: 'Wild West' mentality lingers in modern populations of US mountain regions

You are correct.

There is no cell reception, we have satellite, the ISP here in Canada is called Xplornet, which I believe uses Hughesnet. Download speed is pretty good, streaming services typically work fine with SD, voice comms. can be a bit of pain with the 700ms latency. Since covid-19 with many more people working from home etc. I have noticed a significant drop in bandwidth and how spikey latency can get at times

For us, Williams Lake is the closest town with supplies. We travel in a generally northerly direction via various 'tracks' to we turn onto Chilko Lake Road, which ends up on Tatlayoko Lake road, which will in turn lead to Hwy 20. From there, it is all paved to Williams Lake.

Distance wise is not obscene but the 'tracks' i refer to can be a pain to maintain due to wash out and tree blow down etc. If that is the case it can significantly add to travel times. Winter can be good and bad depending on amount of snow or icy conditions etc. Typically, up until about January, winter driving is actually easier IMHO, as all the potholes/ditches are filled out. We use heavy duty chains on the tires if it gets too slippery and/or too much snow, this can make for a really long drive due to having to travel much slower with chains on.

Although the story and your account are United States centric, I live pretty remote British Columbia, Canada and the same mentality, personalty types exists here as well. As the crow flies, I am less then 300KM to downtown Vancouver yet a trip to the closest town center for supplies is a 10 hour round trip in the truck and that is on a good day. I do not leave the house without chainsaw, firearm and various other sundry gear and items as i may have to sleep in the wilderness overnight or repair my truck on the side of a dirt road.

I do all our property maintenance and repairs etc., even if I could convince a 'professional' to come out this way, the expense would be anywhere from 3X to 10X for the same job in town.

Self reliance and self-sufficiency are not new, trendy traits, it is a necessity for survival that has always been that way and it will probably never change for the people living in this part of the world.

2Xheadpalm | 5 years ago | on: Air pollution is worse than we thought

The answer is obvious, at least with our current 'clean energy' systems and their related costs. We would _all_ just need to use MUCH less energy. This of course would force major life style changes and industry output to be drastically reduced, not something most people and business are ready to accept at this time but the point is, there is a way, right now, with what we have but the terms are unacceptable to most.

2Xheadpalm | 6 years ago | on: Most Americans Are Lonely, and Our Workplace Culture May Not Be Helping

Many of the positive qualities that harbor close ties and meaningful relationships with family and friends require "work" and time, most people today either do not have the time (perhaps due to work commitments etc.) or will not invest the effort required to create new or sustain and make existing relationships grow with time.

I am reminded of the old saying, - 'You can't have your cake and eat it'. By that, I mean, their is a trade-off when devoting many of your waking hours to work, excessive entertainment and other pursuits related purely to material gains and then in turn neglecting the just as important social connections in your life. The result is typically loneliness or worse...

I can appreciate for many people it can seem out of their control to reach some form of work/life balance but over time everyone has the power to both start making changes in their life styles and also, the way they react to the events in their life. With some sacrifices and motivation to do so, you definitely increase your chances of lessening loneliness.

2Xheadpalm | 6 years ago | on: A History of the Wolf

The wolf has and is still persecuted by man, mainly for perceived financial and political reasons today but the negative propaganda and irrational emotion from the middle ages and beyond still lingers in the general population...

https://www.wolfawareness.org/issues

I live in wolf country and in the winter have seen formed packs of 15 or more wolves doing the rounds on my property. If I am out and about walking in that woodlands it is something to be aware of and like any wildlife should be treated with care and respect but moments of brief fear and potential, rare danger is not a reason to eliminate them mercilessly.

This country is also ranching country and yes, every year, ranchers loose cattle to predators such as wolves, cougars and grizzly bear, our neighbors lost 1 cow and had another seriously injured from a wolf pack early this winter. I can appreciate their desire to protect their livelihoods and bovine charges but when it comes to wolves the response to these incidents, many times is motivated with extreme prejudice and their counter measure responses typically far disproportionaly outweigh the losses for a year.

2Xheadpalm | 6 years ago | on: Why All of Our Games Look Like Crap

I love Spiderweb Software and the games they produce but I see what you did their Jeff.

Come on guys this is clearly a precisely crafted, controversial traffic increasing blog (ahem advertisement) piece to stir additional attention for his soon to be released latest game. Plus he gets to rant a bit with IMHO reasonable justifications.

As in it has already created salty posts on the front page of hacker news (+ other news outlets). He is turning what is perceived as many as a weakness of his games into another advantage, bloody brilliant and well done sir! =)

2Xheadpalm | 7 years ago | on: More Americans report near-constant cannabis use

Concur, I found it can be sometimes an extremely frustrating, if not impossible experience trying to understand new technical concepts, however, when working over well trodden ground, it can show new subtle, mostly positive twists of creativity.
