AaronLasseigne | 3 years ago | on: Ask HN: What is your opinion of “unlimited” PTO?

I think it depends entirely on the leadership team and company culture. I work for a company with unlimited PTO and it works well. They encourage people to take it and managers keep an eye on it to make sure you are taking it. Everyone I've worked with takes time without really worrying about it. Some people have even taken sabbaticals for 2-3 months (you have to be around a bit before you do that). Having said that, it does seem ripe for abuse with the wrong company. Also, I would rather take time than bank it for a payout.

One issue with immutable data stores for businesses is compliance with things like GDPR. You need some mechanism for scrubbing data and its version history effectively making it non-immutable.

AaronLasseigne | 7 years ago | on: Self-driving technology is going to change more than cars

Yes, they just won't run. Many sunny places don't have plows and such to handle snow. If it happens to snow, the entire place grinds to a halt. Even if the cars can handle the bad weather, the drivers are so unaccustomed to it that they're terrible on the road to the point of being very unsafe.

AaronLasseigne | 8 years ago | on: Ask HN: What is your most impressive hackathon project?

The company I worked at did a 2 week long hackathon. Another developer and I built a Ruby gem that creates service objects which integrate nicely into the Rail ecosystem. It was a bunch of fun and over time it ended up becoming a big part of our codebase. We open sourced it and it's done pretty well (https://github.com/orgsync/active_interaction). In fact, I was at a conference and met a guy who's company was using it. It was really cool to run into someone benefiting from my work.

Using j and k to scroll is really nice. One of my favorite things is that you can use marks. I'll mark where I am while reading, scroll back to check something, and then jump back to my mark. It's very handy.
