Lots of people on this thread say that clones are inevitable and profitable. That might be true, but at least for me, it would be a sad way to spend my time. I'd hate to tell my kids that I used my best years copying other peoples' products instead of trying to create new ones.

One of the most valuable parts of an online identity is the attention you receive from other people. Social networks make getting attention more efficient. In this way, proprietary tools do a lot to enrich your online identity.

For me, this is a great tradeoff. For example, I'm happy to put my pictures on Facebook because my family and friends see those pictures and leave comments that I enjoy. In comparison, my local copies feel like those dusty old photo albums in my parents' basement that nobody ever opens.

Got it. On security, you might try and test to see whether the added security you offer is meaningful to your audience. The security offered by web services is already sufficient for me to share my most personal emails and financial information.

There is a relevant difference between valuations derived from secondary markets and public markets. Investors in secondary markets rarely have clear understanding of real financials or the capital structure of the company. Anyone up for sharing their Twilio projects? I've always been interested in the platform, but I've seen relatively few applications built on it.

I don't think founders should take giant salaries. At the same time, if you have funding, I think you should pay yourself enough to be comfortable.

People do short-sighted things when they are desperate. I think super low salaries increase the risk of burning out, giving up, or taking a more attractive offer. I think quitting for one reason or another is the biggest risk to a startup's success.

I think this site will succeed or fail based on the quality of the food images. I would recommend you look at how opensourcefood.com cultivated high quality images from their community. If a low standard is set, I don't think there will be much you can do to make the site valuable.
