BlueSlide | 4 years ago | on: Ask HN: Is it unprofessional to leave a new job where everything is a mess?

I quit a job of 2 months with nothing lined up this Monday, the company was full of red flags but I won’t go into it because it only raises my blood pressure.

I’ve decided to take a few weeks out to forget about them so I’m not bringing a bad vibe to an interview/new job.

I was told by friends and family not to quit until I had something lined up, but just couldn’t take it anymore, sometimes you get to your limit I guess.

BlueSlide | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: How are you coping with all the (mostly bad) news around you?

Deleted BBC News, Facebook, and Reddit (unfortunately), just skimming HN for cool tech content every now and again.

I'm feeling a lot better. Leaving my apartment, looking at the blue sky and the bustling people on their way to work. Life feels much better, I'm also not checking my phone as often.

BlueSlide | 6 years ago | on: Can you share your concise morning routines?

wake up, grab some comfy clothes, go outside into the cold and smoke a roll up, get back in and make a coffee, get into bed and check notifications and read stuff on my phone for an hour then go to work

BlueSlide | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you keep your notes organized?

I started using Google Keep until I was up to around 200 project ideas. I then moved it all to Trello, fleshed out each idea, prioritised, and labelled every idea. Ever since I've just been adding ideas directly to the Trello board via the app.

BlueSlide | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: What do you do when have free time?

Recently I've been bouncing from hobby to hobby trying to free my creativity. I bought some nice pencils and a sketch pad and started drawing, I took out a unity learning subscription and started programming VR games, I bought a guitalele to practice guitar without hauling a full size guitar about. And I've been experimenting with live looping in FLStudio with my Akai Mini midi.

What's ruining me though is the amount of time I spend resting, drinking, smoking, or on Reddit. I'm trying to get a fun routine, or switch out the bad habits for good ones, setting myself evening goals.

BlueSlide | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: I cannot stop pursuing ideas and it’s ruining my life

Aside from the fact all of my side projects are currently abandoned (in search of wellness).

I use Trello, and have found organising ideas by value and difficulty has eased the burden of having 100+ side projects.

So.. I have multiple columns identifying which projects I will work on: "backlog", "will do", "won't do", "in progress", and "finished".

The "tickets" are also colour coded by difficulty: green - easy, orange - few days/week, red - few weeks/months.

Depending on how much time I think I will have free in the next few weeks, I pick a difficulty, and will only work on ONE project at a time (This is the only rule that stops me picking things up then abandoning it half way through).

I haven't been doing red projects in the past few months as they require more energy than I currently have, the green ones are the most fun, usually done in a night or a weekend, then I will not start another project until the next week to give myself a rest.

BlueSlide | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: How did you learn to touch type as a programmer?

Just the daily use of a keyboard has given me the muscle memory to touch type. I lose my hand placement frequently as my work keyboard doesn't have the bumps on the home row, so the start of every sentence I take a glimpse at the first key I'm going to press.

I find with programming I make an incredible amount of mistakes as I'm typing and thinking ahead at the same time, leading to me to spamming the backspace every few words (maybe I should pay more attention).

To get good at touch typing, I believe it's just practice without getting lazy, as in, pay attention to the fact you're touch typing, maintain good habits, and prevent bad habits.

BlueSlide | 6 years ago | on: Smart ovens have been turning on overnight and preheating to 400 degrees

The only feature I'd like on my oven, is if an electric hob doesn't have a pan on it for 5-10 minutes.. turn itself off.. On my oven there is no indicator on the hob, I've left it on once and almost injured myself, and my other half has left it on for about 5 hours while we watched films in the other room, I only noticed it because of the heat radiating from it

Google is your friend

1. Council/Local government websites sometimes include a comment thread.

2. Probably not, usually it's done via social media, e.g. Twitter mention.

3. Doubt it, that would be a personal arrangement.
