Kind of, yes. But I don't remember the project being open source when it started. Then there was a long time without any progress and since a few years it seems slightly active again ...

Crono | 4 years ago | on: Ask HN: Do people still use DeviantArt?

Used it a lot until they turned off the old UI - this killed DeviantArt for me as it was not possible anymore to discover the content reliably. They ditched categories entirely, with no alternative. I'm still sad about this, as DA was absolutely awesome. No, I'm not sad ... I'm a bit angry, I have to say. It's another great site that needlessly got fucked by greed, modernization, ignorance and a lot of other bad stuff happening way too often these days ... I think i would even pay for DeviantArt reverting this stuff.

Edit: Asked on reddit how to navigate on DeviantArt some year ago [1] - still nobody could give me an answer. But a few noticed the same thing: Absence of Navigation ...

Doch! Of course we have a - or actually some - words for that. The above-mentioned, but what could also fit is "absurd". Most of the time we have even multiple words with slightly different meanings - it's why I like our language :D

That old joke ... But i have a solution for you: You could use that fancy thing called a "power button" - no joke, it will actually help you in turing of the computer - or do you want to only start it with this button?

Jokes aside: cmon, its not a big deal to open the windows menu to power of the machine. The Word "Start" is now missing since Windows Vista which released 2007 - nearly 15 Years ago!

Crono | 4 years ago | on: Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?

Also love the Ikea Markus chair. Even upgraded it with new wheels (they are ball-bearing rollerblade wheels which run smoothly, quietly and are good for hard floors). Its simple in design (which i prefer over most other office and gaming chairs) does have a nice ammount of things to adjust and it does not cost a lot of money.

Very sad. I found the perfect smartphone for me - the V20. It almost feels like a smartphone that happened by accident and will never return in its glorious form again. Dont know what else to use if it dies. Already have a spare Screen and its 4th Battery ready to be used.

The second screen is just the perfect solution for having an allways on display without a real (and stupid) notch. I love this feature. Also knock to power on is super convenient. Battery is replacable. The Screen is super sharp. Its thin despite its very accessible inner parts. The amp and music quality is absolutely awesome. The camera is awesome as is the sound recording quality. The IR Blaster ist just super convenient. Also the FM-Radio is a very nice addition. The camera-app is just awesome and i have yet not managed to find something simmilar. Also i like the gallery app. And the sound recording app. Its also fast, has enough power still to this day. And the SD-Card Slot combined with the internal memory gives me 640GB Storage. Also Dual SIM is nice.

Really it is such an awesome phone that im not sure how this phone happened in the first place. As each Smartphone does at least 2 things stupid or hase some dumb features no one asked for.

Its allways the same with me - as soon as i find the absolute perfect hardware - its already legacy and nothing like it is buyable in the future ...

The V20 is like the perfect tool. No stupid features only used for sales, no shortcuts, just a very nice package. Two things i would change: Cameras should never stick out and the volume buttons should be on the back like on the G4.

Crono | 5 years ago | on: Dark patterns after the GDPR: consent pop-ups and their influence

I am working as a developer for a medium sized publisher in germany. Im pro GDPR and dont like the way the industry treats the users. But they just seem to continue on their course. Reaction on GDPR was very slow. Cookie Banners (before GDPR) where ignored. When GDPR was there we started to implement regular cookie banners - despite the warning from us developers that this would be illegal.

The first real reaction on GDPR came at that moment Google forced them to. There was a deadline (somewhere in february 2021) where Google would limit ads if no consent-manager is implemented.

When we finaly implemented it they set everything they can to fight against the user: The big blue floating button for the consent manager was hidden - instead i had to implement a link into the footer. Nobody will find it there. Then they disabled the "disable everything"-button. Now you can just allow everything or manually tick a hundred boxes. They totally know that its not legal. But nobody cares. Ad revenue is the most important thing and if they would follow the rules they would loose quiet a lot of money.

As a developer its frustrating to see how user hostile the web has become ... Sure you can get another job, but its the same situation in every other place ...

If you are just a user browsing the internet and beeing annoyed by all this stuff and mistreatment: Im sorry.

Get an ad-blocker (uBlock Origin) and maybe additional uMatrix and learn how to protect yourself. The only way to "vote" is with the active denial of your data. They can see that statistics. They can see the rising number of people blocking all this tracking and advertisement stuff.

As a owner of a 3D Printer i was asking myself the exact same question. Also: The printed parts on the pictures look ok, but not exactly good. I understand that you have to take print time into consideration while mass production, but this is a device that directly interacts with a users hand. Sanding is needed in this case. Or: Printing it by myself in a decend resolution. Would be nice to have this option and pay a bit less for the kit.
