Femur | 16 years ago | on: How to assert that your SQL does not do full table scans

That is not necessarily true. The 'last ditch' operation oracle will perform before a full-table scan is an index range-scan (very IO intensive compared with common index use).

There are MANY factors in play. Stats, parameters, histograms... it really depends.

Femur | 16 years ago | on: How to assert that your SQL does not do full table scans

Excellent demonstration of Oracle's inner workings!

The modern Oracle uses a Cost-Based approach wherein the query optimizer will attempt to perform the lowest-cost opration to satisfy the query. If that means performing a full-table scan as opposed to utilizing an index, then this is what will be done. Statistics, data histograms, parameters (such as OPTIMIZER_ INDEX_COST_ADJ) all come into play.

I create adventure. I leave slain dragons in my wake. I build monuments, plant flags, discover wonders, and lead armies.

I sing duets, dance tangos, and play concertos.

I cook banquets. I wheel, make deals, and strike bargains. I purchase fruit in large quantities. I partake and imbibe. I articulate, expound, and drive home the point. I maintain a strong moral fiber and act with integrity.

I forge trails and bushwhack through jungles. When I am not walking, I am running. I sail and drive and fly and ride and crawl.

I write encyclopaedias. I learn, study, forecast, ponder, and calculate. I know the answer.

In addition to ETFs, I would also like to be able to add mutual funds. Specifically, those offered by Vanguard.

Femur | 16 years ago | on: Google Voice, explained

I consider myself a power-user of this app and make heavy use of nearly all the features. My girlfriend (non-technical) also is able to use Google Voice with ease.

Custom voice mails for specific callers make my day when she sets up a special message just for me.

Femur | 16 years ago | on: Anti-IRS Rant of Software Engineer who Today Flew Plane into IRS Building

I think it is interesting that the IRS treats certain workers differently:

"This section shall not apply in the case of an individual who pursuant to an arrangement between the taxpayer and another person, provides services for such other person as an engineer, designer, drafter, computer programmer, systems analyst, or other similarly skilled worker engaged in a similar line of work."

(this was cited in the letter)

Femur | 16 years ago | on: Ray Kurzweil Responds to the Issue of Accuracy of His Predictions

I'd say for the most part nearly all of the technology Kurzweil predicts ends up being available, it is just the implementation of this technology that muddles the prediction.

In Kurzweil's talks he often expounds on the high predictability of technological progress (price and power of computing, etc). He does not so much cover how humans will use this tech.

Im sure that iPod Nano's (or equivalent) could easily have been embedded or sewn into clothing or hats for years now. Speech-to-text is available now and I use it in Google Voice all the time. It's a matter of choice in this case, not the technology.

I didn't mean to imply that anything was wrong with it, I was just going to see if you often cross-posted.

Femur | 16 years ago | on: A new approach to China

Thanks, but I don't worry about karma. The discussion that followed because of my post was reward enough. :)

Femur | 16 years ago | on: Ask HN: Make one prediction for 2010.

-Personal income tax rates in the US will be increased.

-Google will strike some sort of a deal with Hulu or Boxee.

-The price of oil will hit $100+ again.

-Chrome OS will be a huge hit.

Femur | 16 years ago | on: San Francisco: The Worst-Run Big City in the U.S.

I disagree with your hyperbole. I live in Montrose (very 'in the loop') and generally vote Republican. Much of my family lives in Spring (a suburb outside the loop) and vote Democrat/Green.

Houston is generally a more conservative city than SF. Overall, I feel that Houston is generally well run.

Femur | 16 years ago | on: Why Existing Databases (RAC) are So Breakable

One feature that this article overlooks is Oracle's Automatic Storage Management feature (ASM) which is very commonly used with RAC. This feature is basically a software level RAID alternative in which you can define striping and mirroring independent of what the hardware reflects.

This article also does not really reflect what is commonly done with SAN implementations.

Femur | 16 years ago | on: Users: New Oracle support portal a 'fiasco'

Oracle DBA here. I dislike the new metalink interface quite a bit. The UI is very poorly designed; cluttered, slow to load, and confusing.

Of course, the old metalink was also poorly designed. I guess you could say that it just went from bad to worse.

Femur | 16 years ago | on: Why Saving is for Suckers

I agree with the math in the article as well as the fact that interest paid on liquid accounts is rather low. The author suggests that higher interest can be returned by investing in a domestic stock index.

The author ignores one very important concept faced by individuals: risk. It would be just plain stupid for most people to keep an emergency fund in the stock market. At the same time, it would also be stupid for a person to keep long term investments in a low interest savings account.

It would be a mistake to conflate these two goals while ignoring risk.
