I understand the connivence, but I still don't get why one would want to expose their pw manager to something like an internet browser.

I don't understand why tech savvy people are doubting the security of a pw manager with a strong master pw; this wasn't a failure caused by a flaw in the concept of a pw manager itself, but by a company's shitty implementation and design (I mean c'mon, certain fields were encrypted but others weren't, and they didn't make it super obvious?).

The red flags were fairly evident 2 years ago, even to someone like me who's not very observant; if I recall correctly, their android app was found to have tracking mechanism purely used for marketing purposes etc. Really? Trackers in a password manager, something that should be quite private. Combined with a few data breaches they had over around 2 years ago, I couldn't recommend them to anyone in good conscience.

Lol what a great way to describe what running a simple "npm install" entails.

on: Issue dialing 911 on Google Pixel 6 cell phones
Maybe this is a 'straw man', but this is what I refer to when I say I prefer iPhones for their reliability and stability, or at least what I perceive to be more reliable than most android phones. The closest issue I can recall on iPhone was that issue where saying some nonsense to siri caused an erroneous dialing of 911.
I get it, this is sorta a one off thing, but it irks me when super basic functionality of the phone is unstable, such as making a literal phone call.

Traditional institutions will always be dominant in some capacity, as many people are attracted to the convenience they offer. Unless something catastrophic occurs, crippling traditional financial systems or are truly compelling/easy to use platform releases, I can't imagine anything not owned by a "Traditional institution", let alone anything close to what Web 3 proponents preach regarding decentralization & where ownership lies.

I only have a very surface level understanding of linux, how does code running in user mode incur a bit of overhead as opposed to Kernel?

Wow, a pacemaker malfunctioning due to a stray cosmic ray is incredible/alarming; I've only heard of these single upset events in the context of aerospace applications, not a medical device.

I agree, in my experience, MacOS is one of the most reliable operating systems I've used in terms of lack of crashes or spurrious bugs; the most common bug I see is my mouse pointer dissapearing, which is fixed by opening the tasks view.

on: “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
It's quite frustrating as it's a uniquely North American issue. I also never see this being fixed, as I'm fairly certain iMessage dominates in markets where the iPhone also holds a majority market share as well (makes sense). If you're an iPhone user in north america, many of your friends use iMessage so you don't care about this. If you're an iPhone use elsewhere, you still don't care as you most likely use whatsapp, telegram, line etc.

I mean modern computing is built upon many layers of abstraction, where you only need to understand the technicalities of the thing you're specifically working on, and the tech you don't have time to focus on will seem like "magic" due to abstraction.

on: “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
If you're an iPhone user, why would you care for apple to implement change? If you use iMessage, you'll keep using imessage, and if you live in a market where whatsapp dominates, then you just use whatsapp. I get this is a very shortsighted attitude, but I'd imagine how this is the avg iPhone use would think.

on: Apple's claim is that it bans other browsers for security
Pretending that just cause chrome doesn't come installed with the android open src project, means it isn't a "default" for android is silly; yes, google play services isn't required for android, but an overwhelming majority of android users will see chrome as the default for the OS. You claim they are making a choice, but for the average user it doesn't seem like much of a choice. It's easier for most android apps just to use chrome as an "in app browser", while the users have the option to use a different browser, most won't.

A company the size of google constantly makes decisions that aren't immediately profitable, or will possibly never be profitable in the first place if they believe it will improve PR.

A pretty common generalization I've witnessed is many non technical people (even people who are tech savvy but have no CS background do this) is people assuming the feature that is in reality quite difficult to implement won't take much effort, and vice versa.

on: When will Apple ship other M2 Macs?
Don't M1 chips just have some advantage with using hardware dedicated to constantly compress & decompress memory based on whether it's relevant or not to what the user is doing? Obviously this isn't unique to apple, I just read it was something the m1 chips could do quickly.

I'm 99% sure this is just they're G915 wireless keyboard, just without a volume wheel and the aesthetics appealing to the gamer crowd. Also have you have a poor experience withe the 2.4ghz tech they label as "lightspeed"? I use it right next to a wifi router and I haven't noticed any issues.
