I really don't understand why they aren't trying to do something in between.

If you download/buy a game from xbox live you can virtually lend it and a connection is require to lend the game (and temporary disable your access to that game). If you own a physical copy you can lend it as you did before. Everyone's happy and if the new system is that good and the consumers are happy then maybe the next system could be through xbox live only.

Isn't that a bit unfair to judge the quality of their service based on the DNS being down for every .io service?

This is what I use with Tmux: https://github.com/sorin-ionescu/prezto/blob/master/modules/...

Basically a daemon session is started (if it wasn't there before) and every terminal you open automatically connects to that session. This means that you can close every terminal, the session is still open and new terminals will use the already existing session. As long as tmux itself isn't stopped (reboot, etc.) you'll stay in the same session.

Which is cool because everything is de facto detached.

As such, I believe it only fair that the core of Light Table be open sourced once it is launched. At some level, this is an experiment in how open source and business can mix - it will be educational for us all.
