MattF | 10 years ago | on: Ask HN: How does your team write documentation? What tools do you use?

We chose LaTeX too for those exact reasons plus:

* macros allow us to produce integration-specific installation and user guides

* ability to generate HTML and PDF versions

Lately though I'm beginning to regret this choice. The owner of the docs isn't allowed to commit to our repo (for good reason), but this means I get changes via the wiki which need to be cut and pasted in. Also, the HTML output was never really good enough, so we've stopped doing that. Getting long tables to look good takes a lot of rebuild-and-check cycles. But my biggest issue is that having a common source for each document with minor version-specific changes sounds great until you try to adjust the page breaks. What looks good for one doc looks bad for another, it's a real nightmare.

MattF | 10 years ago | on: Ask HN: What are the best options for cloud IDEs?

I like Nitrous (nitrous.io/) - they have just reintroduced a free plan.

I use it to code C++. It's nowhere near the levels of VS2015, obviously, but it allows me to have a free dev box in the cloud.

MattF | 14 years ago | on: Ask HN: Anyone else in Adelaide, Australia?

Sure, I'll pop right over :).

Are there any HN meetups in Sydney? The start-up world is pretty quiet here in Adelaide but there are quite a few around, and I'd like to encourage a more open/active community.

MattF | 14 years ago | on: What Would The End Of Football Look Like?

In American Football the tackler uses his body more as a missile, typically leading with the head. In Rugby the tackler leads more with the shoulder, making sure the head is out of the way, and it's more of a "wrap-up" technique.

Also, I would think that the velocities and masses involved in American Football are higher - it is more of an anaerobic sport due to the short play duration, frequent breaks between plays, and frequent player substitutions.

Dish Network is listed as a partner and will be releasing a STB with this technology. If that goes well it won't take long for other providers to jump on board too.

Location: State College, PA, USA

Videon Central is looking to hire a software engineer:

Primarily C/C++ on bleeding-edge silicon, fantastic people and work environment, and great management.

Joel Test score: 12/12

State College is located right in the middle of Pennsylvania and is the home of Penn State University. It's not bad for a college town, has great MTB trails everywhere and is not far from Philly or NYC.

MattF | 16 years ago | on: Is Australia set for a US retailer invasion?

I'm an Aussie who's been living in the US for almost 3 years now and I'm amazed at how different the two cultures are, considering how similar they are :). I think the fashion chains have the name to survive, but it's the little things, like icecream and cookies, that will struggle. The preferred flavours and styles are just so different. For an intensely personal example, I haven't seen a Monte Carlo biscuit or anything like it for almost 3 years - I dream about the little buggers.

MattF | 16 years ago | on: Are special glasses needed for regular computer users?

I used to experience "weird vision", which was diagnosed as ocular migraines. I was prescribed reading glasses but was skeptical - my vision has always been perfect. I bought a cheap $20 pair of glasses to disprove that theory, and have been wearing them for over a year now with none of the symptoms I used to have.

The optometrist's theory was the same as stated in this interview - that I had a bit of trouble focusing at book/monitor distance, which was magnified by the amount of time I spent working. The reading glasses take the strain off of my eyes = no more migraines. It's been awesome.

MattF | 16 years ago | on: How Motion Detection Cameras Work

There are a few reasons. There are still a lot of systems that still record to tape, typically in your local minimart, garage, etc. Cameras in malls have a large field of view and cover a large area, so there are very few pixels on target. And as the article implies, lighting plays a big role - it changes a surprising amount even in indoor installations.

This is a very tricky problem and there is a lot of work being done in this area. Surprisingly one of the biggest issues is getting customers to realize that there is a real benefit to upgrading their cameras.
