This whole thing makes no sense for me. I go through Cricket Wireless, which is $40/mo for unlimited minutes and 2.5GB of high-speed data (then throttled to pretty much useless). I would say is equal to their plan that has 2GB. I actually only pay $35/mo due to auto-pay, so even cheaper than their $40 and I get more data.

I don't see their offering as competitive at all.

edit: just saw the "plus taxes and fees" of which there is none for me. So, I pay even less now.

MrUnknown | 11 years ago | on: What Xfinity Internet Data Usage Plans will Comcast be Launching?

The road my Dad lives on has no cable lines because it would apparently be unprofitable for Comcast to run them. This was told to me by a manager I somehow was able to get on the phone more than 10 years ago, and it is still that way out there. Comcast has an exclusive monopoly to service that road but choose not to. All roads connected to it have Comcast lines and the nearest line is less than a half mile away. He is too far away for DSL and other such options. His only choices are Dial-up and unreliable satellite (trees around yard).

I understand he is an exception, but it is not nearly as uncommon as you are implying.

I usually use the "It's like mailing a postcard" comparison.

MrUnknown | 11 years ago | on: Show HN: Pastor generates and stores passwords without storing any passwords

If I write it down, I will lose it. I do have some passwords that follow a specific pattern that I can remember easily for sites I might need to access outside of having KeePass on a machine (haven't put it on my phone).

I love this idea, I hate having to have a actual database to keep after and secure, and I wish it could be done in a way that wouldn't require that, but sites have too many variables for passwords that for me, literally, this wouldn't work on sites I use every day.

MrUnknown | 11 years ago | on: Show HN: Pastor generates and stores passwords without storing any passwords

I used to use something like this, then you realize, it won't work for 50% of the sites out there as you can't customize how the passwords are generated.

Can't use special characters? Must use a special character? Can use $%^& but not * ?

Amex has a limit of 8 characters, how many does this generate? I want to use more than 8 for most sites, how do I do that? etc.

The Javascript bookmarklet let me change these settings, but then I had to remember them for each site that had custom settings.

I just switched to KeePass, fixed all of that.

MrUnknown | 11 years ago | on: Hyundai’s 2015 Genesis will automatically brake for speed cameras

yep, people will naturally drive at any speed they determine to be safe for the road they are on. Those signs help make them aware of it.

I can honestly say that 90% of the time, I probably am not sure what the speed limit of a road is that I am on. I naturally slow down in residential areas, and speed up for highways. Generally this is 75mph or so in my area with a speed limit of 65mph. If they raised the speed limit to 85mph, I personally wouldn't really like it and probably wouldn't drive that speed.

I've gotten only one speeding ticket in my life, and I have never been in any accidents of any sort. The speeding ticket was on a 2-lane straight road, in the middle of the day with barely anyone around, so I was more comfortable with going fast and didn't even know I was going that fast.

edit: if you're going to down vote me, at least add to the discussion and prove me wrong.

MrUnknown | 11 years ago | on: Hyundai’s 2015 Genesis will automatically brake for speed cameras

Usually detecting them can be too late. They can clock your speed and take your picture extremely fast and work in a very focused area usually.

The detector would have to catch "Scatter" from it from cars going through it or whatever. Which, IR is emitted from many sources, so it couldn't be used as a reliable way to detect it.

Also, a lot of the triggers are by video cameras. If you have ever setup any basic home security system(Like Q-See), you can choose areas as "Triggers" for recording. The operators of the cameras basically draw out areas that act as trigger zones. See this as something of an example: http://rhythmtraffic.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/WebUI.jp...

MrUnknown | 11 years ago | on: Hyundai’s 2015 Genesis will automatically brake for speed cameras

Speed cameras solely exist to generate profit. A road can, and does, have speeders all day and not a single accident.

I'm still going to hit a person/car if they do something stupid on the road if I am speeding or not.

If you need any supporting facts that they are only for profit, there is more research in red-light cameras. They have shown that they can cause more accidents because people try to avoid going through the intersection "just in case" they don't make it all the way through and get a ticket. This causes aggressive braking and accidents. It also doesn't help that a lot of states will shorten the length of the Yellow light at these intersections to ensure more people will go through them. Yay for safety.

As for speeding cameras, my state recently took one down due to backlash because they installed a camera 100ft before a speed increase sign. The "tickets" (I quote that because they are usually fines, and not really tickets, and usually do not cause points to be put on your license if your state has that system) included a photograph of their car passing the new speed limit sign.

The state admitted no wrong doing, and believe it was a great spot to put the camera. If I remember correctly it was in a 25mph zone that went to 45mph. It would ticket cars upto the 45mph sign for going 30mph in a 25mph zone. While "technically" correct, it's pretty obvious the motivation of wanting to put it there.

To change sound playback device, you simply right-click on the speaker in the system tray > Playback Devices > choose what you want and click on Set Default.

Sounds like most of your issues mostly relate to just not knowing how to do certain things in Windows. Which that's basically the same reason people have issues with Linux.

It's fine to be comfortable in Linux, that's actually a great thing, but Windows is incredibly capable and usually easier to use for more advanced things. The basic UIs are similar enough to not be a big deal.
