I have very limited research experience (2 undergrad practicums) but the professor I worked with was a leader in their field and sat on a journal review panel along with others of similar standing. So I suppose consensus among colleagues is " x,y and z are leaders on a topic, their opinions are in b journal so I should read that."

Mental health is the reason why I still go to my crossfit gym. Its small, the same 8-9 people show up when I do. Ive only lived in this town for two years and my only friend moved away earlier this year - no family. I did quarantine when a case was discovered during the rare time I have to be an office and I had two serious depressive episodes in which I spent the better part of three days intoxicated. I've been into fitness for almost 15 years, sure I know I can get a workout 10 different ways on my own but right now I have to have other people.

Mr_Sweater | 5 years ago | on: Apple announces Apple Music radio

Spotify's emphasis on podcasts and other forms of media kills the experience for me. Apple Music is more of a final destination, I use many other sites for discovery and rarely make or update playlists - I think it excels in library management. The one thing I do find horrific is how it tries to 'prefer' original lp's vs remasters.

Mr_Sweater | 5 years ago | on: Ask HN: What have the past 12 months taught you?

Professionally : Leave IT asap, I'm fine with the "latest and greatest" leaving me behind, given all the time and freedom of a remote workday with no children or spouse to distract me, Id rather workout, watch tv, cook and read than implement yet another infrastructure automation tool. I cannot work remotely. I do not know what to do with myself professionally.

Personally : I lack life experiences, the Midwest is homogeneous and I need to upend my life the moment the world returns to normal. Planning life more than a few weeks at a time is very hard but not impossible. Two workouts a day puts me in a very happy place mentally. There is immeasurable value in community bonds, I lacked this for the first 25 years of my life and having found it recently I cant believe I never sought it out sooner.

Mr_Sweater | 5 years ago | on: I won’t buy ebooks anymore

I struggle to see it as anything else and I find it difficult to read blog posts like this. Why are so many people so viscerally angry in oss?

Mr_Sweater | 5 years ago | on: Linux is Most Used OS in Microsoft Azure – over 50 percent of VM cores

This might be short sighted of me, I dont have a ton of cloud experience but I imagine its as obvious as Linux scales orders of magnitude better than Windows, the projects that need massive scale go cloud. Conversely sql server can demand massive scaling, I wonder what percent of Win Server are for sql server workloads.

Mr_Sweater | 6 years ago | on: Ask HN: Why did you leave the tech industry?

Ive not left yet but have all but resigned myself to a different field, likely EMS or nursing. Eight years in (health and ed tech) and its become project management with little actual engineering work. Im only 27 but I regret waiting this long. I started to see signs that my interest was waning a few years ago and figured I just needed a change of scenery...three changes later and I think the message is clear.
