Sorry but I don't really see the link between that article and Microsoft's inconsistent use of the term RTM.

They can still move to a rapid release cycle and have a solid RTM. Chrome and Firefox manage to do it every 6 weeks.

This is the thing that has annoyed me the most about this whole thing. RTM has always meant "release to manufacturing and IT pros". If Microsoft wanted to change this fair enough but they shouldn't have called it an RTM if that isn't what they meant.

God yes I miss those buttons on my paperwhite :(

I also wish I could turn the backlight off completely rather than just lower it to the lowest setting.

I have pretty much always done this for mail I am just CC'd on while on holiday for more than a couple of days. I don't auto delete email sent just to me though. Works well and makes the return to the office a simpler task. Anything I need to know about I am told about or copied in on the messages that are important on my return. Much easier than going through 3,000+ emails in the morning all the while getting told about the important things anyway.

I couldn't disagree more. Yes Office has loads and loads of extra features but I have never seen a university use anything more than the most basic of features. LibreOffice covers this completely and I find it insane that people think that they need Microsoft Office in order to do such basic tasks.

IMHO you started him with boring languages. C and Forth? If he has an Android phone I would have started with Java. Otherwise I would have just started with Python. He would probably have found it much more engaging than C to begin with and wouldn't have required so much work on your part. Just my 2c from personal experience like yours.

OrsenPike | 12 years ago | on: Rebuilding a simplified Firefox logo

I see your point but this is obviously a graphics guy (or girl) and probably not a programmer to the level that is require for a lot of the work on Firefox. Now if this new logo were designed by a developer on OdinMonkey I would say it was time wasted as they could be doing a lot more important thing but I don't think this is the case :)

OrsenPike | 12 years ago | on: New MacBook Airs may suffer from Wi-Fi connectivity issues

I have owned several Macbook[Pros|Airs] over the years and consistently the biggest issue has been poor wifi. Either dropping or just being generally crappy performance wise compared to other systems right next to me on the same next work. It is annoying that it is still an issue several years later.

OrsenPike | 12 years ago | on: Three's 3G data network is down UK wide

I thought the same. I have unlimited data so I knew I hadn't hit any limit but thought maybe something was up with my phone. Rebooted several times. Reset network settings. etc. and nothing. I went to call them this morning but when I checked with a few colleagues also on Three and they had no data either I figured it was an outage. Annoyingly they didn't put anything on their site until after I saw this post.

OrsenPike | 12 years ago | on: Three's 3G data network is down UK wide

I noticed I had no data at around 23:30 last night and still no data at around 8:30 this morning. I was pretty surprised to see the outage last that long.

Things appear to be working again now (12:30) albeit slower than usual.

FYI the blue theme is included as part of Update 2 for VS2012. It looks much nicer than the light and dark themes that 2012 has by default.

OrsenPike | 12 years ago | on: GCC 4.8.1 released, C++11 feature complete

Anyone know if there are any Windows builds available for GCC 4.8.x ? I normally use TDM/MinGW but they are lagging on 4.7.2.

Also slightly off topic how is clang on Windows these days?
