Well, idk about you, but I hear of at least one school shooting in the US every week. Statistically, the numbers might not be much, but it sure caused 95% of schools to enforce active shooter drills, no?

> A majority of the US population supports stronger gun control. Unfortunately, in our political system, that's not sufficient to make it happen.

Isn't US a democracy? If majority of the population supports stronger gun control, it should be easy to pass.

Anyway, I don't mean to put you on the defensive. I understand that you love your country.

There's clearly a strong opposition against gun control in US, so the fact that the media is downplaying the shootouts by comparing it to natural disasters is not surprising.

But keep in mind, while Americans find it to be a commonality, it's rare to see news like this in other parts of the world: "...but students don’t need the active-shooter drills now conducted in over 95 percent of the nation’s schools..."

Active shooter drills? In schools? You folk live in a first world country but act like you are living in an active warzone

Considering how many shootings happen in the US and so many victims being little children in schools, I find it odd that you think it's a great place to prosper when being shot at is a real life threat esp. for those who can't even protect themselves.

As an outsider, to me the American society doesn't seem like a sustainable one. And it corroborates the fact that so many Americans are emigrating out of America.

There's nothing wrong with having your username and real name tied together, unless you don't want certain information or views (i.e political affiliations, sexual preferences, etc) which is broadcasted under your online persona to be associated with your real life person. The problem is that the OP didn't do the due diligence to create a different persona to voice subjects they did not want associated with them IRL.

Like I said, I understand the damage has been done, but to prevent future instances (and possibly mitigate existing ones) the OP will have to take certain measures which may involve sacrificing information published under their current online persona (by deleting accounts, changing usernames etc). It should make things a little harder for online sleuths, but nevertheless not impossible to track down.

I can provide another suggestion, which is to change their real name. Depends on the OP, how far they are willing to go to undo their mistake.

To the original poster:

I understand what has happened, but in the future try to take better care of your online presence. To remain anonymous, it's essential to create a completely different username each time you signup to a website. That way, it becomes much harder to track you across the web. In addition to that, some people also use VPN to mask their IP. Some also use different or anonymous email addresses.

For damage control, I'd advise you to delete accounts that can be deleted. If you prefer create a new one but using the above mentioned safety practices.

That's like asking why doesn't everyone switch to landline phones since they have the same calling functionality as mobile phones.

Answer: Well obviously, since landlines are missing the biggest feature mobiles phones have: portability.

Point I'm trying to make: 1. Apps are smoother than web experience 2. Have a much native-er feel, etc.

If app is available, I'd rather use an app.

Not to mention the United States who killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings which caused long-term side-effects on the populace, imposed sanctions, and even today control Japanese policy decisions and have permanent military occupation in Japan.

Firstly, as others have suggested, take a break. Relax, don't think about job, coding or whatever else that bothers you. Spend your time doing something entirely different.

Second, join somewhere else where you are more valued. Or better yet, start your own company if you feel confident enough.

Third, find places (either offline or online) where you'll meet like-minded fellows. Join libera.chat if you wish. It's a great place to hang out no matter your networking skills.

Meditate, find peace, and all this nonsense internet hate will no longer bother you.
