Sorry - it was just that HN recognized the link as being submitted before, but it had an awful and completely irrelevant title, so no one would know what it was unless they went hunting for this amazing script at random; unless they knew it existed in the first place and went looking for it.

In other words, it completely defeated the purpose of sharing the link, because they would have only known about it if it was there. A true catch-22.

All I wanted to do was let HN readers know how to enhance their user experience here on the site in the best way possible.

Perhaps, however, the real question should be "Why doesn't HN have features like this integrated from the start up?" How come some scripting hackers can integrate something like a basic search function into the site, while HN can't seem to do so itself?

Feathers are made by a Japanese surgical tool company. They are considered by many to be the sharpest blade you can purchase.

That said, practice with Merkur or Derby's before you graduate to feathers.

I bought the Derbys on Amazon as well (100 pack for 15 bucks! Two year supply, basically, instead of a stretched 2 month supply for 30 dollar Gillettes) but I have to say I prefer the feeling of the Merkurs. Still, the price is right for the Derbys, though I do want to try feathers in the future.

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: The creator of Monkey Island plays and narrates his game, 20 years later.

I have some hope for the adventure genre yet, even after being seriously let down by Monkey Island 4 (make sure you've played Monkey Island 3 and Grim Fandango though; they're both excellent!)

That said, I've heard Psychonauts is good, though I haven't played it. My understanding is it's free on Gametap.

One that I missed when I was growing up was Touche: The Adventures of the 5th Musketeer - it's just about as good as the Lucasarts games - Note: there is a version with full voice acting, and this is the only place I know where you can actually get it: http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/3557929/Touche_-_The_adventu...

I haven't played this, but it's supposed to be very good as well (made from ex Lucasarts members): http://www.vampyrestory-game.com/

I found the Sam and Max series from Telltale very underwhelming and disapointing, so I never played past episode 4 in the first season.

On a somewhat related genre note, I've also found the game Beyond Good and Evil to be as immersive and entertaining as the MI series.

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: Microsoft's Windows 7 Starter is a gift to Google

Exactly - this screws over Google Chrome, which is a shame because it's a slick browser (though I personally am keeping a closer eye on the Chromium project, especially since I use Linux). I'm not sure this is ultimately to the benefit of Google at all, as the author indicates, and might even be an offensive tactic against them, seeing as Google is really pushing their browser hard.

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: Firefox New Tab Page: Cognitive Shield

This looks like an awesome idea. I haven't been able to try it out yet because I'm running FF 3.07 (simply because Ubuntu repos haven't brought it up to 3.1 yet, and I don't really want to bother that much atm), but it reminds me of the controls built into some FPS's and even old Lucasarts Adventure games like Full Throttle or Grim Fandango. Except the default actions in this case are all favorite websites. Nice to see Mozilla labs pushing the envelope yet again.

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: From Geek to Freak: How I Gained 34 lbs. of Muscle in 4 Weeks

Sorry, didn't see the date on the article until you mentioned it - then I found it on the bottom of the page. Still, it seems like interesting information to me. I want to form a routine around these principles. How well did this process work for you?

Also, could you be more specific about detrimental supplements?

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: Hulu Gains 10 Million Viewers In February, Now No. 4 Video Site In U.S.

Hulu is an awesome service and a great alternative to bittorrent, especially since it's of comparable quality. I honestly don't mind the ads so much, especially since I know TV requires money to make and these fund the various projects out there. It's good for my hard drive free space too, since I don't want TV shows taking up space after I've watched them once.

Two suggestions for them:

1)Make Hulu videos downloadable through some kind of player like the BBC has. I commute on trains a lot and don't have mobile internet access, but would love to spend the time being entertained by TV.

2)Post entire seasons of various series. For instance, I recently began watching the Office and have worked my way through seasons 1 - 3, watched 5 on TV and am currently watching 6. I can't watch season 4 unless I rent/borrow it (which isn't a huge deal, but what's the big deal about posting old episodes anyways? Dvd sales aren't going to be profitable much longer, not they way they were a few years ago.)

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: Going Galt?

I think this is an awesome way for people to remind the government about the way things like property and monetary policy should be handled. The government is only screwing things up anyway: case in point, not a single bailed-out company has recovered.

In fact, the bailouts have only increased the madness, leading to speculation of cronyism and further-reaching nationalization, among other things. We're nearing the 15th month of the recession; at this point most of the other recessions we've been through in this century have ended by their 15th month. The only one, to my knowledge, that was worse, was the great depression, which was filled with government intervention.

This isn't about the economy to Washington. It's about power, and increasing that power over our daily lives. If we want to be free, all we need are liberty and the ability to place real value on goods and services. When the Government interferes, we can't do that.

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: Dear HN, I have a charitable proposition for you, but I need your help

Yeah, and what rules would those be? Last time I checked the guidelines, this fits just fine into the off topic area of submission. I'm a real guy who will really give to the charities, who wants to be able to put a 10,000 dollar check in some deserving group's hands. I mean, that could be an absolutely awesome story if it ever came true.

You're mistaken by thinking I'm disrespecting the site. This is not spam. If I wanted to spam, I'd build a bot and go to digg with this. But I don't.

And lastly, this topic also provides for people to give me the opportunity to discuss who I could best give this gift to. Hacker News is about hackers and tech, mostly, yes. But hackers are people with hearts, too. They can help a guy get money to give to charity.

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: Dear HN, I have a charitable proposition for you, but I need your help

Dear HN,

I normally wouldn't submit this here, but I'm kind of desperate. I tried to submit on Reddit and was immediately downmodded by trolls and /b/-tard types who disparaged me. I enjoy hacker news because everyone here is helpful and intelligent and never unnecessarily mean. To get to the point...

I have a way to make a sizeable donation to several charities, but I need your help. I'll explain, so please bear with me.

The tourism board of Queensland, Australia is holding a contest for what they are calling "The Best Job in the World." You get to live on the islands of the Great Barrier reef and work for 6 months, while collecting the equivalent of $100,000 USD.

Candidates need to submit a video, and then get voted up or selected by a panel.

I submitted my video several days ago, but unfortunately, I'm way over my head in this virtual popularity contest that's kind of beginning to remind me of what goes on in high school! I have a group of maybe 250 friends on facebook I can directly reach, but some of these people have over 30,000 views! How can I compete?

HN - I desperately need your help!

I wanted to be different and stand out when I made this video, so I spent 4 days locked in my room, animating my video, which is in the link above. Please visit it and give it the highest rating you can. I hope you enjoy it!

But Why should you do this? Because with my acceptance to this job, I will give a sizeable donation to several charities. You can help me help other people in need. I'm thinking at least 10 percent of what I make, and hopefully more. To any who would scoff at this proposition, note, this is not a small number in the least. You vote can help make a real difference here.

Some history about me - I'm a 22 year old who had the great misfortune of graduating this past May in this horrid economic climate that only seems to be getting worse in the foreseeable future.. I've been getting by by doing freelance video work, which I only got by providing 3 months of free internship work at a studio, post-graduation. This job could literally start me off in my life on the right foot and be a tremendous boon to some deserving charities.

Some of the charities I want to give to/am considering: Doctors Without Borders, Make a Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude's...

And please, I would love to hear suggestions of any particular charities you would like to see helped - I don't know enough and will consider everything I hear.

So, just to review - please watch and rate my video 5 stars, spread the word, upmod this story; this will help me get the job worth 100,000. I will then be able to give at least 10 percent to various charities.

Thanks for your help!!

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: I was driven mad by the Chinese education system

Hey, that's just plain insulting! FYI I've been all over China - I spent 2 weeks there with a sports team in 2005 playing all over the country - literally east from Beijing to as far wast as Urumchi, which nearly hits the Russian border - in fact, Russians came down to watch the team play.

Have you ever been to China? I have. I know what it's like.

The kid obviously has internet access - isn't that something? There are so many possibilities inherent in that alone for him there, heck, even for something as simple as a solid friendship to keep him grounded. What gives you the authority to declare his fate?

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: I was driven mad by the Chinese education system

I'm not sure I agree with this sentiment. Surely there must be a better way to show proficiency in something besides testing (in the conventional sense).

Besides, the US isn't a Democracy, it's a Republic, albiet a democratic one. The founders really hated the word and made sure it wasn't in any of the founding documents.

"Democracy: A government of the masses. Authority derived through mass meeting or any form of direct expression. Results in mobocracy. Attitude toward property is communistic negating property rights. Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether it is based upon deliberation or governed by passion, prejudice, and impulse, without restraint or regard for consequences. Results in demagogism, license, agitation, discontent, anarchy."

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: I was driven mad by the Chinese education system

This article is by a kid who is still in this situation. I can't speak or write Chinese, but if someone can reach him via the comments on the original article, please tell him to leave there and explore the world. It's much bigger than the silly schools he's in and there are plenty of opportunities for him to become successful.

Rabidmonkey1 | 17 years ago | on: Poll: Atheist, Deist, Theist?

If I cared, I'd be on the atheism subreddit right now. But I don't, and that's why I'm here, learning about tech. I hesitate to say this, but let's stay on topic. The atheism subreddit can be so vitriolic and it would be a shame to foster that here, not that this poll in and of itself does that.
