on: Stop overstimulating your mind with digital entertainment
This is ridiculously preachy. I do think the overall thesis is correct, in that boredom can be a powerful force for creativity and inspiration, but paragraphs like this make the article completely off-putting:
"If you want to let music inspire you and enjoy its real beauty, I have few very simple rules: Classical Music and no “skipping”. Then I will trust my appetite."
I do like sitting down and actually focusing on an album, but suggesting only that only classical music is worthy of appreciation is absurd. There is an amazing variety of wonderful modern music in a multitude of genres.

I love this. When I use Google assistant to start a timer, it always says "Sure, 5 minutes. And we're starting now."
This takes about 5 seconds, and the timer doesn't start until it's done. It's a minor annoyance, but I'd prefer a simple chime.

on: How Well Can You Hear Audio Quality? (2015)
I got 5/6 with a Schiit Magni/Modi stack and Beyerdynamic DT 770s.
On the flip side of the coin, my wife regularly listens to music just out of her phone speaker and claims to not notice the difference.
Everyone enjoys music in a different way, and I'm glad there are plenty of options!

on: Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
It took me a solid 6 months from "never worked out a day in my life" to "can do a pullup".
I started just hanging from the bar, then moved to using a stool to get above the bar and lowering myself as slowly as possible.
Eventually, with practice, I could start holding myself in place with arms bent, then finally start moving upward.
It was a journey, but I'm glad I did it!

How did you find a good PT? How does it work with insurance? I want to also establish a regular PT routine but I'm unsure how to start.

To be far to GMTK, he has an entire video about whether Dark Souls should have an "easy" mode that discusses this exact point in great detail, and overall he makes the same concession you do for art and experience.

This is amazingly well done. Although simple, it's actually enjoyable to listen to.

They've only been doing one or even no Yahoo questions per episode for a while now. I almost suspect this will relieve them and give then an "out" to pivot to different formats.

This is my issue too. Earplugs don't help for idling trucks, or subwoofers. Nothing I've found does.

A neighbor used to come home from work late at night and lock their doors three or four times, and every time it would wake me up. I wish there was a silent door lock and it would just flash the headlights.

I have been using my DT-770s every single day for hours and hours for about 5 years now and they are still in perfect condition. I expect them to last an extremely long time.
Meanwhile, I'm on my third replacement airpods (thankfully all covered by warranty, but not much longer!)

How do you remember the new words you look up when reading books? Making an Anki card for each will make sure those words are permanently etched into your memory.

Both! I make a card with English on the front and Korean on the back, and I include a sample sentence in a custom field with the target word highlighted. I always read the sentence out loud after I answer the card.
I also make Cloze cards specifically for grammar where I'll cloze out the conjugated verb and put an English hint, like:
7시니까 댄 씨는 벌써 {{c1::퇴근했을 거예요::I think he left work}}.

I've been using Anki for about 3 years to learn Korean and it's been tremendously successful. In that time I've learned around 3000 new words (both English -> Korean and Korean -> English with reversed cards) and a ton of grammar (using Cloze cards). I couldn't imagine trying to memorize this amount of information any other way now.

I can't recommend Audible Genius's Building Blocks course enough. It teaches many fundamental music composition techniques and ear training using a piano roll layout (like the one found in Ableton and other DAWs). It's very inexpensive and you will absolutely develop a great foundation for writing your own music while going through the course. You'll learn drum programming, rhythm, harmony, melody, and more, and it will directly translate into Ableton. There's a 7-day free trial as well.

on: Why Adventure Games Suck (1989)
Adventure games are still not dead! Amanita Designs is making some of the finest games around - in particular, their masterpiece Machinarium. Anyone who even has a passing interest in adventure/point and click games owes themselves the pleasure of playing it. Sublime music and art, a lovely wordless story, interesting setting and characters, and well-designed puzzles.
