on: Would you use a Linux based computer, better or equal to a mac in quality?
As a consumer family, during 2014 we bought several used Win 7 i5 Lenovo T410 and T510 from a simply-lovely and adorable eBay vendor. $200-$250 price class.
The ones with video GPUs chips went to the kids. They're extremely happy, so the laptoos must be good enough. They use them daily. I got The Beast, and added an SSD and BluRay player drive. I'm very happy too.
It's been a great year for used computer hardware. The available used hardware with Win 7 is great. YMMV.
Merry Xmas!!

We were wondering about that. Now several of us have stumbled across this item. So, report to HR tomorrow morning for your exit interview.

99M loc for dealing with timezones. Before it was a library call.

on: Ask HN: I have to analyze 100M lines of Java – where do I start?
Java was apparently introduced in 1995, and thus has not quite been around for "decades". Close, but 19 years is not quite "decades". LOL
Presumably somebody didn't write 100M lines of code on Day 1.

on: Poll: Which 8-bit computer got you into programming
Puh, we had one NAND gate carved from wood and some delay lines crafted from buffalo guts. With some early work in quantum annealing, we calculated the name of God to 50 places.

on: Hey developers, stop forcing me to login to unsubscribe
Especially when your email address has been signed up to dozens of mailing lists as some sort of perverted revenge via spam. I can't log in because I didn't create the account. The developer is doubly at fault for allowing an account to be created without confirming the email address.
My revenge is training Gmail that email from such senders is Junk and Spam. Eventually Gmail dumps them automatically, hopefully for everyone.

on: Startup Idea: Used Car Leasing
Duh, Mercedes Finance will happily lease you a nice, clean used Mercedes. Especially if it meets their Star Certified criteria. My first MB was leased from new for three 3-year lease terms; obviously terms 2 and 3 were a used car. My next MB was used and leased for three years. In all cases the lease terms were clear and fair, and the interest rate very competitive. Right now my car loan is with them and under 1%.
I'm sure that other reputable brands have similar programs.

on: Ask HN: What will happen when everybody uses an ad blocker?
The content (and ad) provider will provide a page of advertisement first, then count to ten, then release the content. User can choose to watch the ad, or (with ad blocking technology) a blank screen for ten seconds.
This is already being done with videos.

on: Ask HN: What software for diagrams and flowcharts do you use?
Flowcharts are stupid. Simple systems can be internalized (kept in your mind, perfectly), and complex systems are too complex to graph to any human scale size or useful purpose. These two categories do not overlap. They apply recursively all the way down. Waste of time, no value.

on: Poll: How many Bitcoins do you have?
We arranged things so that we held onto 25% at the outset. Now worth ¥25B+ ($250M+), split six ways. Some of us have already cashed in a small fraction, but we're mostly holding out for another few years. Thanks everyone. S et al.
