I think the key difference is the usage of face masks and plainclothes - as far as I can tell, from various different news articles - ICE agents weren't concealing their identities en masse using face masks under Biden and Obama.

Based on historical examples of secret police, plainclothes and face masks on Federal Agents by default could definitely make people think that we are "approaching a police state".

Upas | 2 years ago | on: Best Pens for 2024: Gel, Ballpoint, Rollerball, and Fountain Pens

I used to use Pilot G2s and was a huge advocate for them until I tried the Uniball Jetstream RT. I just think it writes more smoothly.

But I've never actually had to put a refill in -- I bought a 3 pack of those about 8 years ago and they're still all going strong. I just don't write enough.

Upas | 8 years ago | on: SpaceX successfully deploys the Star man

The title of this post is incorrect. We have to wait a few hours to know if the rocket man has made it to Mars orbit.

EDIT: It's not a Mars orbit, its a solar orbit that puts it close to Mars at times.

From the linked article: "If all phases of the flight are successful - and that will not be known until at least 6.5 hours after lift-off - the Tesla and its passenger will be despatched into an elliptical orbit around the Sun that reaches out as far as the Planet Mars."

Upas | 8 years ago | on: iOS designers: What is it with all the motion lately?

You might also not suffer from the same sensitivity to motion as the author's wife.

I think the main takeaway here is that there is a "Reduce Motion" setting which is not being respected in some cases in iOS 11.

Upas | 9 years ago | on: How Adobe Flash fell, and why Flash content is worth preserving

I thought this was a decent read, but I'd like the point out that the author really isn't making the case to save Flash as a technology. Rather, he's saying we should save all the content generated with Flash.

The headline is a little misleading.

Upas | 9 years ago | on: Your project's RCS history affects ease of contribution (or: don't squash PRs)

There is definite value in having more granular commits, but at the same time, there are commits that don't really belong in the commit history.

While it might take more time than squashing everything, git rebase -i really helps a ton in these situations. I can fixup all the "fixed typo" type of commits into a meaningful commit, and even reword commits if necessary.
