I misread your original comment. I rescind my previous statement. Apologies for commenting on the internet while tired :-P

I think it's relatively well known that heads of people/whatever fancy name HR peeps come up with for themselves are generally sociopathic scumbags, so it's not surprising to me that this was the case.

on: Where have all the sacked tech workers gone?
The point is, it's nobody's business why. The reasons are probably personal. Even asking opens a form of blame-game dialogue instead of beneficial and productive conversation.

Honestly I'm sick of seeing people post this kind of thing. There's _all kinds_ of reasons people can not have the "expected" amount of savings at _any_ age. Medical. Divorce. Other life disasters. Failed investments. Business failure.
These kinds of questions frankly just lead to victim blaming and expose the asker as either (a) having grown up wealthy and staying that way their entire life, or (b) completely callous.

My grandfather was a mechanic on the first 747 to roll off the assembly line. Quite a majestic career the 747 had.

on: Ask HN: How is your company training you to become a better developer/engineer?
honestly from reading how you write about yourself, I would immediately drop you into the "thinks more highly of themselves than they ought". Bucket. People who call themselves high performing rarely are in my experience. It's the humble people who learn and grow for the joy of it who truly shine.

I'd recommend hopping off of t3 asap if you're searching for performance gains - performance can be extremely variable (by design). M class will even you out.
General storage IOPS is governed by your provisioned storage size. You can again get much more consistent performance by using provisioned IOPS.
Feel free to email me if you want to chat through things specific to your env - email is in my about:

Honestly, phones mostly just feel like utility devices to me anymore. I can't say I "like" my phone, but when I don't like one I can definitely tell you!

on: What software engineers can learn from the rapid collapse of Fast
I think judging an engineer's engineering skills by the (effectively random) chance of them being at a startup that "makes them rich" just reveals a significant lack of understanding of how the current startup world works. The vast majority fail. The ones that succeed tend to not make anyone any significant amount of money except the founders.
There seems to be a significant number of tech industry employees still floating around that are convinced that instant financial independence is available for all.

often you're billed after release, can take it from any pay you make when you're out, etc. It's pretty evil.

It’s about approach. Most of the time people aren’t actually trying to harm you. Coming into every disagreement with a “you’re the enemy” viewpoint is a sure way to make sure there’s no such thing as civil discourse. Despite popular belief, blanket outrage actually fixes very little.

You know, it wasn’t so long ago that “take the high road” was the common mantra. Turns out, even if you disagree with people or think they’re wrong, you can still behave with decorum. It makes everything more pleasant.
