abhikandoi2000 | 8 years ago | on: Ask HN: How do you become productive in a new project as a senior developer?

I did this:

- got a broad overview of the code from my team

- agreed to be the on-call just after two weeks of time; learned a lot because I had to move fast to fix issues (also call people)

- asked the starting point and the core part of the entire codebase (helped me understand code at least 3x faster)

- deployed a feature within 2 weeks of joining

Note: I am not a senior developer, but a software engineer.

Apart from these things, I am great at anything related to Linux (shell, networking, security etc).

I usually learn something in a short period of time. I move fast and break things to learn super quick. Though it takes time to master things.

Out of all the companies that YC has funded, which one do you consider to be the best? How about the second best?

By best I mean one which has had the most positive impact on people's life, where positive impact is some function of just two variables - the number of people affected and the intensity of that affect.

Also of these two variables which one do you weigh more and why?

"“We’re fast approaching the day when people will expect accuracies of centimeters in real time out of their handheld devices and then we’ll see a lot of head scratching as things no longer line up,” Smith told Scientific American three years ago. It looks like that day has arrived"

Has that day really arrived?

I doubt, given the fact that most consumer navigation systems are reliable (directions on Google Maps, pick up on Uber and alike) as long as they are not being blocked by major hurdles.
