on: Swedes say no to Google Apps for government use
I've understood that most people have been surprised by the surveillance just because its in an area not many people pay attention to, but for a well run government to A. Not know this is going on or B. Not expect it, is inexcusable.

on: What are the implications of NSA surveillance on the average Internet user?
While these are all valid reasons to be concerned about future abuses, none of them are implications on the average internet user resulting from the uncovering of PRISM.

on: What are the implications of NSA surveillance on the average Internet user?
Except nothing has changed. This has been going on for enough time that if the average Internet user hasn't been effected by it yet then they don't have much to worry about in the near future. So for the immediate future there are absolutely no implications on users other than being aware that someone can look at your communications, which you should have assumed already. Because if the NSA didn't already have your information than Google, Facebook and every other social network certainly did, something that we have been well aware of for a long time.

on: Firefox 25 will get a major UI overhaul
Its really basic things like not lining the window management buttons with the rest of the icons that really piss me off as a designer.
Is this really too much to ask for? http://imgur.com/zD8lUYW

on: Haswell will offer 50 per cent more battery life in laptops
Well battery life, at least as I've seen it on Macs keeps going up year after year so I'm pretty confident that trend will continue. Not sure about other manufacturers but only because I haven't kept up with them not a lack of confidence.

on: Are Designers Crazy?
While soap may not bring about intense discussions about its design, and one might say that it is less designed than the UI of the app the article talked about, the ideals that art and design revolve around are wholly intertwined. Art and design talk about things that would seem ridiculous and esoteric from an engineering standpoint (thus the primary argument of the article that none of the changes made any difference to the usefulness of the app). These are things that hold little value outside of the face that they communicate the purpose and intent of the app or button better than a different size or proportion. There is a reason that design schools have such a close relationship with the art community, while designers don't always maker art, and a bar of soap may not seem to be art at all, disconnected from its purpose, the design of a simple bar of soap can be put in a gallery and be viewed as art. (see the toilet that started the Dada art movement).
Design is not art in and of itself, but you can't talk about one, without talking about the other.

on: Are Designers Crazy?
Thats the point. Design is all about unlimited perfectionism according to some imagined idea... and its also the reason that most artists and designers are broke. The pursuit has little to do with the rationality of time management and efficiency, rather, design is about pursuing an idea of perfection that cannot be achieved.

I'm disappointed that I don't have a source on this, but from what I understand, you have to sign papers that gives the government full access to your accounts at any time when you join the CIA. For such a high level individual I don't think that the internal spying is unreasonable, especially when it is an understood part of the system.

on: The new iMac: updated models after 1.5 years
I saw it and thought the exact same thing. For all of the great design work that Apple does it is a real shame. But it occured to me that the shape is made so that the device just looks like a flat plane when viewed at an angle (and what we are looking at is the breakdown of this illusion). To me that they are trying to cheat by creating an illusion of extreme thinness instead of designing something to be really thin.
Its ugly and from a design standpoint the dishonesty of form is a really big turnoff.

They do have Dieter Rams blessings in taking inspiration from his work at Braun. Copying the Mondaine clock is just clearly a ripoff and terrible.

on: Give people an iPhone 4S, tell them it's an iPhone 5
This, I think is the greatest argument for the iPhone. While everyone clamors for the new upgrade they really are premium and durable products. Apple makes their money when everyone thinks they have to have the newest iProduct.
