on: “No tax on tips” is an industry plant
I don't think you read the article. It explains that those three members who came forward were not actually servers, but restaurant management & owners. Additionally, the article is not missing this issue you call out. The author goes so far as to discuss Casino dealers in Vegas who would stand to gain the most out of this sales tax proposal (sales commissions in your anecdote do not count as tips). But primarily, the author is concerned about the 1/3 of tipped workers who do not pay federal income tax and are at risk of falling below the poverty line due to reductions in their minimum wage.

on: Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (April 2024)
Alexander Huesing - Data Analyst/Scientist (Retail analytics)
Location: Bentonville, AR
Remote: Preferred
Willing to Relocate: No
Technologies: SQL (Presto/Trino), Python
Resume/CV: www.hues.ing
Email: [email protected]
5 years at Walmart in business operations (buyer/merchant) and then Pricing Strategy. Studied econometrics at Claremont McKenna & foundational Computer Science at Harvey Mudd, then online CS classes at SNHU (thanks to Walmart employee benefits). I love computers and consider myself to be a novice self-taught programmer. Through my career, I’ve leveraged my business experience & communication skills to place myself in more technical roles that align with my passion for learning about technology. I’m a good fit for a PM or data role in retail or supply chain, and willing to take a step back into a more junior position that brings me closer to engineering.

on: I'm sorry but I cannot fulfill this request it goes against OpenAI use policy
I believe this occurs because Amazon allows sellers to promote their items by bidding on keywords— and often times, the highest quality keywords will be specific category-defining brands or products. At the same time, the original supplier of that brand or product keyword won’t need to spend their advertising budget on that query because customer conversion is high enough despite the friction.

on: Ask HN: Working with CPG Retail Data
Part of the problem is that those 3p data providers aren’t sophisticated, but the other factor to consider is that the account managers and support workers assigned to you are less sophisticated. I work at a major retailer and one of the 3P vendors you mentioned does partner with us on providing data pipelines that we query directly. Feel free to pm me, I’m always happy to learn more about other people’s experiences in our industry

on: What AT&T and Verizon knew about toxic lead cables for decades
The original WSJ report used soil samples underneath old power lines to determine that there were still lead-sheathed cables leaking into the environment. And based on the responses from telco’s legal/PR departments (ie denial of health risks), this isn’t a story they wanted to leak.

on: Ahrefs Saved US$400M in 3 Years by Not Going to the Cloud
“ While Ahrefs uses AWS benefits for hosting our frontend in different parts of the world, the vast majority of Ahrefs’ infrastructure iceberg hides in the colocation with owned hardware”
They use the cloud when scalability is a concern. Most people recognize that cloud services are more expensive than managing their own infra when utilization is high and usage is predictable. Kudos to Agrefs for making the right decisions for their needs.

on: Did Airbnb kill the PM role?
None of this sounds revolutionary to me. This article implies PMs at AirBnB should handle the role of Product Marketing, have talent for design, and handle user flows. I think most companies already seek out those skills, but generally struggle to find that talent so they settle by finding specialists who can do each function well.
