on: Amazon Dark Patterns
This has pissed me off in the past. My reviews getting rejected. The problem ultimately is that Amazon NOW has separate functions for reviewing a product and a seller. The product reviews are public, the seller reviews are not. If your review of a product is just bagging on the seller, it will be rejected. Like the one your wrote for the weights.

It's better now with asp.net core and visual studio code both of which run rather well on Debian Linux.

on: Age differences in learning from an insufficient representation of uncertainty
So does one have to remain open to learning about everything, including subjects they don't find interesting or can you simply continue to wonder and learn about things that actually interest you. Do you have to force yourself to learn things as we were "forced" during our early education? For example a developer is annoyed/bored with re-learning frameworks /languages/concepts and takes up a hobby they find interesting where they are still hungry for knowledge. Say homebrewing :)

Time and resources well spent, glad we have our priorities in order. Maybe Hollywood actually runs the country and not the banks and corporations, ahh, ahh, I mean elected officials of the government.

on: Google Security Team Member on NSA: "Fuck These Guys"
Any data running over a leased or owned fiber between data centers should still be encrypted. Why didn't they have a VPN between the data centers? I don't get it and I personally think it's inexcusable. I believe I would lose my job if I my companies data was stolen and their was something I could have done to prevent it, and rightly so. I personally think that everyone has been far to forgiving of companies like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook etc... for having done such a poor job of protecting the data we entrust to them.

on: Statement of Condemnation of U.S. Mass-Surveillance Programs [pdf]
I would love to have been a fly on the wall when the director of the NSA is meeting with the president telling him that the only way to ensure national security against terrorism is to start these mass surveillance systems.
"Okay", says the president. "I guess if it's the only way then I'm sure the people will understand it's in their best interest" slight chuckle escapes his lips at the end.
When it should have gone something like this.
"Bullshit! I will not sacrifice the freedoms that are the foundations of America, simply to make your job easier on you. If you can't do the job without destroying the very freedoms you should be protecting, I'll damn well find someone who can!"
Director of NSA: while stuttering "Well actually we could work together with the CIA and FBI as well as foreign intelligence to garner the necessary intel that would give us actual probable cause to start monitoring someone by legal means with a warrant and everything."

I don't think this is a company I would continue to work for if I was in your shoes. At some point the strong suggestions from technical advisers and common sense should out weigh their one size fits all test.

on: A Proposal: Renaming Backend/Frontend to Application/UI Developers
I agree with you here. You almost have to be a generalist anymore but I would add that it's important to know where your strengths and weaknesses lie. For example I can build a passable UI, I know the rules for creating friendly user interfaces but I know it would be much better to have someone with strengths in design do it. They're attention to the details will always make my work look like what it is, a server side developer playing at being a UI developer.

Anyone else have an issue with funding someone else's dream when their net worth is say $20M and yours is maybe $100K or less?
