anondon | 9 years ago | on: Gitea – A community-managed fork of Gogs

My major issue with Gogs and Gitea is that they lack a cache to store the git history/log. So if you work with repos that have many commits (example, the git repo itself or the linux kernel repo), you will forever be waiting for the commit message for each file to load because Gogs/Gitea scans the entire git log for each file.

This was an issue when I tested Gogs a few months and I don't see any mention of a cache so I think it's still an issue.

For smaller repos though, Gogs works incredibly well.

Regarding this fork, it makes sense if the owner of gogs is not giving write access to others. At the same time it would be a shame if Gitea becomes popular and overshadows Gogs. I hope they can work out a mutually acceptable solution and merge.

The problem with learning numerous programming languages with the implicit hope of learning about various programming pradigms is that it's not a focussed approach. Instead explicitly set out to learn different programming paradigms and hopefully avoid languages which have an overlap of programming paradigms.

So instead of "In 2017, learn every language" I would say "In 2017, learn every programming paradigm".

anondon | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: What Are the Best Current Methods to Delete Yourself from the Internet?

The problem is that the user has no control over his data, so you are at the mercy of the service provider.

Surprisingly, a lot of websites/services don't even give you the option to delete your account.

Best method to delete yourself from the internet:

* make a list of all services you are on

* if a service lets you delete your account, delete it

* if there is no delete option, email customer support and ask them to delete your account. Most sites will not create a fuss about it though it takes time and lots of back and forth with the customer support

* search for yourself on google and ask google to remove links to your profiles(social media). They won't remove links to eg- articles about you, since it does not belong to you

Depending on how generous you were with your personal info, it is most likely not possible to delete yourself completely.

Funny story: I had a LinkedIn account where I signed up with only my email ID and gave no personally identifiable info(like a fake account). A few days later I get an SMS from LinkedIn telling me person XYZ sent me a request or something. How the f_uck did you get my number? To say the least, that scared me so I deleted the account.

Also note that when a service deletes your account and data, it is more often a soft delete so your data is still with them. Good luck getting a hard deletion of your account/data.

anondon | 9 years ago | on: A man who put up $1.5M to help 200 Syrian refugees

Nice to read this among all the xenophobic nonsense.

A lot of people have this notion that welcoming (muslim) immigrants is like asking for terrorism, that they take away jobs, that they don't integrate well into society and they are out to convert everyone to Islam or something like that.

I don't know what makes believe these crazy ideas, but the media certainly doesn't help, painting every terrorist attack as something to do with immigration policy or muslims. Social media plays a major role in spreading all these wrong stories. Unfortunately the vast majority of internet users get their news from social media platforms, where emotional appeal of a story trumps facts, which is something fake news writers have exploited to great success.

I have no idea how people can support policies which actively want to stop helping immigrants. It's a humanitarian crisis and we need to do everything to help people who are suffering. As simple as that.

What is the status of the MOOC? When can we expect additional details?

YC should consider writing the occasional blog post about the projects it's working, it would be interesting to follow and the feedback from HN might be useful.

anondon | 9 years ago | on: Bitcoin Is Being Monitored by an Increasingly Wary U.S. Government

The main point of the article seems to be that anonymous cryptocurrencies pose a threat to US national security since the US Governmeent can't just cut off access to funding for terrorists which supposedly was very effective so far.

Ignoring all the BS in the article, is this argument valid?

anondon | 9 years ago | on: Elon Musk, Travis Kalanick, Indra Nooyi to Join Presidential Advisory Council

Can Elon, Travis influence Trump's policies in any meaningful way by being part of the PAC?

A lot of Trumps plans such as opening up fossil fuel reserves, not believing in climate change (though Trump said he would keep an open mind in a recent interview), going hard on immigration go directly against what Silicon Valley stands for. Will it be possible to influence Trump's plans on these issues? I remain skeptical.

anondon | 9 years ago | on: On Getting Older in Tech

By facts, I mean what Elon Musk has stated himself.

The interview with Sam Altman in How to build the future is one instance where Elon states this. In the same interview Sam also states that when Elon took him for a tour of SpaceX, Elon talked about the engineering aspects in detail and had a surprisingly good understanding of how the components worked.

Another instance is in the recode interview I think.

And how often do you see Elon going around doing PR stuff? AFAIK not much.

anondon | 9 years ago | on: On Getting Older in Tech

> If he wasnt spending time on PR he wouldn't be doing interviews

There's a difference between spending minimal time and no time at all on business, PR aspects.

> founder worship

I only stated the facts. Where is the worship?
