Ignore posts that don't interest you, but don't discourage people from starting side projects. You never know what these side projects morph into.

> if there's a hardware issue that requires the device to be taken "out back", then there should be a means of diagnosing faults on a locked device.

A dangerous suggestion.

A better policy might be for Apple to require it's users to backup all their data, wipe the phone clean and hand over an unlocked device. After getting back the device, you could sell it on ebay, like OP suggested, or wipe the device clean in case you suspect malware was installed and continue using it.

anondon | 9 years ago | on: Ask HN: Why do websites let people make their own passwords?

How will the users remember complex passwords? By using password managers. So you should probably be asking, why isn't everyone using password managers. Maybe it's because of inconvenience, laziness, not caring or any combination of the three factors.

Does anyone know if there is any special effort to construct buildings that can withstand reasonable earthquakes in New Zealand?

Christchurch seems particularly prone to quakes in New Zealand. I hope the people of New Zealand are safe.

It looks like these exploits require either shell access or installing an app that contains the exploit code.

Apart from the Flash vulnerability, did any of the exploits use Chrome to gain all permissions on the Pixel? That would be scary, because the user would just have to be served Javascript containing malicious code or visit an affected website.

Why isn't Linux or the BSDs usually included in these pawn competitions?

Nice interview!

The guy behind indiehackers.com, csallen, is doing an incredible job with the site. Interesting interviews tailor made for hackers, the forum is an interesting place and it's been fascinating to follow his journey which he shares in vivid detail.

His stand on climate change scares me.

What can the public do to prevent him from opening energy reserves and backing out of climate change agreements?

Are there efforts going on to prevent this?

Building a wall along the Mexican border...I don't see the thinking behind the decision.

Is the link still appearing? (I can't login to my google account now to check)

The software is there, but what about the hardware to go with it?

The only laptops comparable to Macbook Pro hardware quality and battery life are the Dell XPS series and the Thinkpad X1.

I feel there is a serious shortage of good laptops with linux pre-installed that the non-technical user can pickup and start using.

> The smaller communities exist as goodwill to make the high traffic portions seem more authentic.

What makes you think smaller communities exist out of goodwill? People are allowed to create subreddits, and whoever is interested joins the subreddit and engages (or just lurks). It has nothing to do with goodwill. It's fascinating how you spun your narrative to make it seem like "Reddit is owned by a mass media conglomerate" is an evil thing.

I'm jealous! Yours is literally a fairy tale launch. Just kidding, actually no, but congrats man! Very inspiring story.

A few questions:

-What did the companies that posted on your site have to say about the quality and quantity of candidates?

-Do they feel it was $50 well spent?

-Did people apply through your site and find jobs so far? Do you have a way of tracking the stats?

-What is your future direction of this site? What features do you plan to add?

-Oh, and how did the $10 Digital Ocean VPS hold up with the sudden spikes of traffic?
