on: Japanese Bookshop Stocks Only One Book at a Time
This is such flat, materialistic comparison. What about going back to roots, hara how its called in Japan, doing one action well, instead of focusing on the amount, focusing on single quality and trying to find beauty in it. I would almost call it practical art. There is something peaceful about it.

well you get suger in bread, fruits etc. You don't have to eat sweets to get daily intake of sugar(For example brain needs sugar for it to work).
Brown sugar is definitely better as a sweetener compare to the white refined sugar as all the healthy parts are stripped.

on: VW engineers have admitted manipulating CO2 emissions data-paper
If you would think of all humankind + planet as one entity, then you would deduce that it does not make sense to create such redundant engines because for you as a one cell it can be enjoyable and cool but for the cell next to you its actually damaging. So its a zero sum game. You should think of others and always ask yourself if your actions does not harm others or at least try to reduce the harm if possible.
So yes, I would say the more power, the greater moral responsibility for the future of our species. For sure.
Once you are great mind and able to design modern engines for super cars then I would say you could do many other 'jobs' which would probably benefit us all more than making strong cars.
BTW I like fast cars myself. My conclusion is rather utopian. If you feel like you should do something more beneficial in position of such person who makes engines, maybe you could consider finding another job. But can you generalize that to all? Probably not..

Interesting question. Depends how you working on it. If you are working on improving the efficiency then I would say its ok. If you are tampering with the actual values because your engines are bad to environment then yes, you are directly responsible. Are those workers who put the engine together responsible? Absolutely not. Unless they are aware of such shady actions.

In that case that would mean that Nick is single point of failure which does not help much. It's single proxy. Although we do not know whether transparent or not.

No it's pretty solid, from the ground up stance. Those who values independence and control over their life are much happier with this setup rather than going too quickly to barely catch up or even fall.
I think there is nothing wrong with your observation as long as you remain kind to people around you. Meanwhile you can be figuring up way how make your ideas happen.

Did you get paid during the time ? What went through your head that you managed to keep being there for such long time and not to search for different job ? Also from your story it looks like it left quite a stain and still is not washed.
I think its good to look at things as you are(or were) in the leading position(of your life) and where did you made bad decisions. Not to put all the 'bad' stuff you regret on someone else, whether it is company or individual. How else you gonna fix it ? At the end you decided to go there, stay there, get upset and leave. It was tough but the people around you just did what they were asked to. Once you take 100 procent of responsibility on yourself and your decisions even if you are employed you will feel way more free and satisfied and from this state of mind you can for example think of your startup/idea and get fully independent on the physical plane as well. And not thinking of some revenge still being in past..

Yesterday there was created topic questioning the initial amount mined by the founder, so see yourself, its not perfectly clear.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=175996.0Same with the reason behind creating this particular crypto-currency. Since the creator is not known to public we can only assume.

on: Want to Block Common Passwords? Sorry, That is Patented
Thing is that using common sense will reveal that this patent is restrictive in a bad way since it helps potential attackers to get into system. No matter if it's year 1980 or 2000.
When Volvo invited three-point seat belt it was shared with other manufacturers because they were well aware the obvious benefit to all. Same goes eg. with blocking simple passwords.

The point is to dig up something cool in the vast universe of information and actually deliver it. It is nice there are friends and university Professors who knows about this certain technology way deeper but can they _really_ deliver ? Sure, they will teach other kids and those kids will teach others or maybe going to be employed at some tech company.
This kind of success is just more potent a visible. It really depends from what angle you look.
This guy has financial, educational and social success. From standpoint of the startup culture, I think he's done very well. Anything can be judged only by comparison to something else.

Should not the company hire some kind of professional(s) who will observe both sides(mostly the bank) and provide objective feedback? It seems like they were jumping into unknown territory without any knowledge.
I really can't believe all companies go IPO blind like I get impression from the article.

on: Futuristic Predictions That Came True in 2012
Are you really sure we as western hemisphere do not own nothing to the eastern or more accurately to people who struggle? I'm no historian but I heard something about the wiping out Indians and enslaving African people. Are you really sure you can say that we are independent snowflakes who deserve all things by right and to not actually look where to pay back for our mistakes to improve all Earth life conditions no matter of location and nationhood ?
The thing is we have not solved many problems yet, we just postpone them and trying to argue with improvements on technological layer which is relatively shallow on its own.
Western culture is for example filled with materialism and definitely not pushing us forward. By reducing the needs and learn about struggle of others beyond our family would help to reduce waste and improve life of others. Both sides win.
